An Expert Panel Discussion on the Future of Research on Climates for Diversity and Inclusion

Panelists: Lynn Shore (Colorado State U.); Lisa H. Nishii (Cornell U.); Derek R. Avery (Wake Forest U.); David J.G. Dwertmann (Rutgers U.); Patrick F. McKay (Rutgers U.); Michàlle Mor Barak (U. of Southern California)

The positive team and organizational effects of climates for diversity and inclusion are clear based on the empirical evidence. However, less is known – from both theoretical and applied perspectives – about how these climates form. Diversity and inclusion climate scholars have recognized the lack of knowledge regarding its etiology, yet flaws in the literature have prevented us from moving the field forward in this area. Importantly, the field lacks consistency in agreement on construct domains and measures, and this has hindered our ability to make progress in research and provide clear guidance for practitioners. We must understand what a construct is and how it should be assessed if we are to develop a clear plan for studying how it comes to be. This panel brings together six scholars from the diversity and inclusion climate literatures, each with a strong voice in recent conversations in this field. Broadly, these panelists will discuss – from, at times, divergent perspectives – how we might move the field forward.
