    Determining the Dissertation Question and Securing Data: Mid-Stage Doctoral Student Development Workshop

    Proposal Summary: This workshop is a developmental experience for PhD students in the process of developing and writing their dissertation proposals or students conducting independent (or first-authored) research for the first time. We will focus on fine-tuning one's research question and making sure one seeks adequate design and data to appropriately test the research question. We will assist PhD students in thinking about ways to locate the data they need to answer their questions and discuss alternative and creative ideas to pursue to attain appropriate data.


    What Is It About? The session's goal is to make participants aware of the importance of openness and creativity when pursuing their dissertation work, as participants may find themselves adapting their research questions to, and collecting data in, contexts that they might not have been considering.


    Topics

    What Makes a Good Research Question?

    You have an idea and you think it's a pretty good one! In this session, we will help you translate an idea you are genuinely passionate about into a testable question that the field craves an answer to.

    How Do You Get Your Data? Lunch and Learn. Free food will be provided.

    If organizations are not knocking down your door to give you data, it's okay! In this session, we will emphasize creativity, persistence, and resilience as we discuss alternative paths to securing your data.

    How Do You Manage Your Data?

    This may be your first time managing data independently. In this session, we will discuss the "must dos" of data management and help you avoid some common mistakes of data mismanagement.

    Keeping it Honest: Ethics Simulation and Discussion

    We all want to do the right thing when it comes to our research; but when you don't know what you don't know, you can find yourself in some sticky situations. In this session, we will engage in simulation and discussion regarding common ethical dilemmas for "novice researchers". We will focus on ways to recognize and navigate ethical concerns that originate from various sources (e.g., advisors, committee members, site partners, etc.). Additionally, we will highlight some ethical concerns that are magnified when we partner with smaller businesses and entrepreneurial firms.

    Bring it all together and make an impact on the field of Management!

    Who should apply? This workshop will benefit doctoral students who are beginning their second or third year of their doctoral programs. Fourth year students may be considered if they are still seeking data collection opportunities; however, this must be communicated in their statement. This opportunity is open to any doctoral student within the Academy of Management (AOM). However, preference will be extended to applicants who are affiliated with the GDO and/or Entrepreneurship divisions of AOM.


    How Do I Sign Up? To sign up for this limited space opportunity, submit a brief statement (less than one page) summarizing the following:

    1. your stage in the PhD process;
    2. your general area(s) of research interest;
    3. a potential research question you wish to refine;
    4. your interest in and reasons for applying to this workshop; and
    5. the name and email address of a faculty advisor or mentor who supports your participation in this workshop.


    Send this information to Alison Hall (Alison.Hall@uta.edu) and Jonathan E. Booth (j.booth@lse.ac.uk) no later than July 25, 2019. If selected, Professors Hall and Booth will send a registration approval code for registration. Priority will be given to early submissions of high quality.

    I definitely want to attend this PDW during the AOM conference. Please advise next steps. I am a member of  GDO. Please see my responses below:

    Stage in the PhD process = Fall 2019 Year 2 of DM program

    General area(s) of research interest = Gender and Diversity in Corporate America (Financial Services Industry)The scarcity of African-American Women at the C-Suite Level

    Potential research question you wish to refine = Do Mid-level and Senior-Level Management African-American women in the financial services industry who had sponsors vs. those who did not experience career advancement/promotions that would position them to be in the succession pipeline leading to the C-Suites level in Corporate America

    Interest in and reasons for applying to this workshop; and = The refinement of my research question, suggestions on getting data needed for quantitative research, also would love to have a discussion on theories and choosing theories to relate to my research.
