Are you a faculty member who may consider becoming a department chair?
Have you ever thought about becoming a program or center director?
Have you ever wondered how (or why?!) a faculty member would pursue the role of associate dean or dean?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Join us for our PDW "Look Before You Leap: Making the Jump from Faculty to Administration" (part of Session 173)
Date: Friday August 5th
Time: 3:40 PM Pacific Time
Room: Tahoma 1 in the Seattle Convention Center (SCC)
Abstract: Often, faculty who take on more administratively-oriented roles – department chair, program director, center director, dean – are seen to have "joined the dark side". While it may not be appealing to all, deciding to take on administrative positions as a faculty member affords multifaceted career opportunities for many individuals. In this PDW, a panel of faculty and administrative leaders will share insights on their own experiences in deciding to take on administrative roles as well as the challenges they experienced in the process. This PDW offers participants the opportunity to gain better understanding and appreciation of what the transition from faculty to administrator realistically looks like.
Panelists Include:
- Alva Ferdinand – Texas A&M
- Len Friedman – George Washington University
- Allyson Hall – University of Alabama at Birmingham
- Ann Scheck McAlearney – The Ohio State University
- Nir Menachemi – Indiana University
- Vicky Parker – University of New Hampshire
- Paula Song – Virginia Commonwealth University
**Important Caveats**
- While the PDW is hosted by the Health Care Management (HCM) Division, the content will be relevant to any faculty interested in learning more about administrative pathways. Everyone is welcome to join the conversation!
- Due to scheduling needs, the session was placed in the afternoon session of the Emerging Scholars Consortium (Part 2; Session 173). This session is meant for anyone who may encounter opportunities to assume administrative roles. Attendees at all career stages would find relevant insights in the moderated discussion.
- There is no need to register for the "Look Before you Leap" session. However, should you have interest in attending the earlier Emerging Scholars Consortium content, we encourage you to email Nick Edwardson (nedwardson@unm.edu).
If you have any questions about the session, please do not hesitate to contact Amber Stephenson (astephen@clarkson.edu) or J'Aime Jennings (jaime.jennings@louisville.edu), HCMD Academics-at-Large.
We look forward to seeing you there!
