  • 1.  Statement in Solidarity with Black Lives Matter

    Posted 06-05-2020 10:39
    Hello GDO Colleagues

Several days ago, legal academics in Canadian and US institutions circulated a statement in solidarity with Black Lives Matter.
There is now a statement by Management faculty and I invite you to support the statement.

Thanks, Eddy, for sending on the Statement in Solidarity of Black Lives Matter.  Could you please tell us what the purpose of this statement might be?  Will it be sent or posted somewhere?  What is the intended use of this statement?

I would like to think that there was a greater purpose than allowing individuals to sign and feel as if we have "done something" when there is really no outcome.

Thanks for any information that you can provide!  --  Gayle

    Hello Gayle and everyone

Hope you are well! I circled back with the originator re your query. At the moment, the statement is meant to capture the expressive sentiment and have people commit to the principles. I understand institutions are hoping to leverage on statements like this to develop more concrete actions. Although the document is public, I don't believe it will be posted anywhere.

Happy to connect you with the organizers.

    Be well,

    Ed

Thanks very much for the information about the "Statement in Solidarity with Black Lives Matter."  Given your response, and as a Past President of the Division, I would encourage our membership and our leadership to consider what WE should do with such a statement.  Unless we can identify a specific usage and outcome, it's just a statement that sounds nice and makes us all feel like we've "done something."  But the truth is that we have not done anything by signing it.

Let's open a conversation about how WE think we can utilize such a statement.

    In solidarity,
    Gayle

    Hi Gayle and Ed

Thanks for sharing the statement, Ed.  I found it thoughtful and thought provoking as we all grapple with what this means within our own contexts and for our practice. While the statement sets its context as Black Canadians or Americans, it is just as relevant for Black Australians. The Black Lives Matter protests across Australia this weekend have been testimony to that. While the protests acknowledged the persistent injustice in the US exemplified by these most recent acts of violence and police brutality, they clearly shone the light on Australia's systemic racism.

Gayle, your point that we need to make sure it isn't just a statement that we sign and think that is enough is a timely reminder to us all about how do we move to meaningful action.  Your suggestion that we open a conversation within the GDO community aligns well with Belle Ragin's calls to action through our teaching.

As Belle noted, the GDO Connect site has a Teaching Resources folder which includes diversity syllabi that colleagues have already shared.  We will expand this to offer a special folder on online/hybrid diversity courses for members to keep adding to this, as we seek to build teaching resources that members can draw on in our roles supporting students and teaching them respect for diverse perspectives.

How we each respond will differ, but if we can build a sense of community and share our stories through the GDO Connect community on what actions this movement has prompted, we may go some way to identifying a specific usage and outcome.

As well, I draw your attention to the resources the AOM Insights have compiled from their repository on racism, equality and ethics, as these too may be helpful.
