    Summit Date and Location:

May 31 – June 2, 2020, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC

    Objectives and Scope

Our three-day long summit will bring together educators and industry professionals who seek to integrate transformative leadership into their work. The current landscape presets ample opportunity to contemplate our roles as leaders in the work for justice and equity. The Justice and Equity in Leadership Summit provides educators and industry professionals with the opportunity to explore how the intentional integration of transformative leadership into their work can lead to improved justice and equity outcomes for their students, clients, and communities.

Transformative leaders critique inequitable practices, ask questions of justice and democracy, and address issues of individual and public good (Shields, 2010). When one is engaging in transformative leadership, one is working to enhance equity, justice, access, opportunity, democracy, and civic life (Astin & Astin, 2000). Studies of transformative leadership frame desired outcomes but the processes transformative leaders engage in and the identities they embody warrant exploration as well.

The Justice and Equity in Leadership Summit is an opportunity to explore how educators can teach transformative leadership within their fields and contexts and how industry professionals can incorporate transformative leadership into their work. Participants will work with the facilitators – co-coordinators of The Oaks Leadership Scholars – and with each other to deepen understandings of transformative leadership theories, to strengthen pedagogy and andragogy for teaching our students, co-workers, and employees to engage in transformative leadership, and to develop a plan to incorporate intentional engagement in transformative leadership into our work. We invite you to join us for the JEL Summit May 31st – June 2nd, 2020 to learn together and build a network of practitioners to support each other.

The communities we serve face systemic and systematic issues of justice and equity. As academics and engaged professionals, we are uniquely positioned to work with students, industry leaders, community leaders, peers, and employees to engage in leadership for justice, equity, and the common good. Join us to explore:

    • Theories and conceptualizations of transformative leadership,
    • Pedagogy/Andragogy for teaching transformative leadership,
    • Transformative leadership in your educational spaces
    • Transformative leadership in your industry
    • Learning – being appropriately curious, first do no harm
    • Allyship – supporting others
    • Advocacy – crafting your message
    • Activism – organizing others
    • Developing partnerships: communities, academies, industries

We anticipate that the support network developed in the JEL Summit will facilitate learning and partnerships beyond your three days in Raleigh, NC. These relationships may support student projects, internships, professional development, research, and innovative practices. We look forward to working together.
