  • 1.  What institutions that integrate D&I into their courses and curriculum?

    Posted 10-24-2018 15:23
    Hi All,
Do you know of any institutions who have successfully integrated D&I into their courses and curriculum? If so, would you let me know and, ideally provide a contact name and information? Many thanks -- this is to respond to an inquiry from my University's Deputy Vice-President for Equity and Community.
    Best regards to all,
    Corinne

I am interested in this topic, too. Could you please post a list of institutions that reply to your query to the list?

    Thank you,

I'm passing along an article that might help (co-authored with Ishva Minefee, Oscar Jerome Stewart, and Nicole Jones Young) -- we offer tangible strategies + resources for faculty and administrators interested in repairing the 'leaky pipeline' for underrepresented racial minorities in b-schools. Let me know if you have trouble accessing the article:

     Minefee, I., Rabelo, V. C., O. J. C. Stewart, I., & Young, N. C. J. (2018). Repairing leaks in the pipeline: A social closure perspective on underrepresented racial/ethnic minority recruitment and retention in business schools. Academy of Management Learning & Education, 17(1), 79-95. doi:10.5465/amle.2015.0215

AbstractDespite initiatives to diversify business school administration, faculty, and doctoral student bodies, challenges to the recruitment and retention of underrepresented racial/ethnic minorities (URMs) persist. A "leaky pipeline" metaphor is often leveraged to describe these challenges, whereby disproportionately few racial/ethnic minorities initially "enter" the pipeline (i.e., academic career), and this initially low supply dwindles ("leaks") at more advanced stages of the pipeline. Beyond simply describing leaks in the business school pipeline, we seek to explain why leaks occur and how they can be repaired. Specifically, we contend that mechanisms of social closure-discriminatory evaluation, knowledge- and resource-hoarding, and the preservation of dominant group identities-not only restrict URMs' access to the academic pipeline, but also contribute its "leaks." After discussing these mechanisms, we conclude with recommendations to the AACSB, an institution that can facilitate change and reduce social closure within business schools.

Kenan-Flagler Business School has successfully integrated multiple D&I courses into its undergraduate and MBA programs. I've just completed the online version of a basic D&I course for the MBA@UNC program. Other professors here teach courses on Managing a Diverse Workforce, Gender and Work, and Diversity and Inclusion. We also incorporate D&I into orientation programming for undergraduate, MBA, and MAC students.
