This survey study is designed to understand survivors' experience going through the criminal justice system as a result of a sexual assault; specifically, we'd like to know about each survivor's interactions with various personnel representing the system.

Participation Eligibility: individuals who meet the following criteria

    ·         Women identified survivors of sexual assault

    ·         Age 18 or older

    ·         AND

    ·         The sexual assault occurred when you were age 18 or older

Purpose: To assess how the current procedures practiced in the criminal justice system are perceived by survivors of sexual assault.

Principal Investigators: Michiko Iwasaki, Ph.D. (Assistant Professor) and Amy Henninger, M.S. (Doctoral Student) at Loyola University Maryland.

Collaboration: The Baltimore City Sexual Assault Response Team (SART)

    Method: Online survey

Duration: It will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete this survey

Contents: There are three parts in this survey

    A.  Information about the case (i.e., type of assault, where/when it occurred)

    B.  Your interaction with various personnel (i.e., patrol officers, case detective, hospital nursing staff, victim advocate, and State Attorney's office)

    C.  Demographics

Confidentiality:  All information you provide will be treated confidentially following the guideline of the Campus Institutional Review Board of the Loyola University Maryland. Only we, the principal investigators, will be able to access the information, and the information will be maintained by us for seven years from the completion of the project using a password protected computer.  No individual responses will be shared.

Voluntary Participation: All participation is voluntary. You may stop at any time for any reason without any negative consequences.

Risks: Some questions may remind you of unpleasant experiences going through the criminal justice system. You may become upset or the questions may trigger painful memories. You may choose to exit the survey at any time. If you need emotional support, please call the RAINN National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800-656-HOPE (4673) to be connected with a service provider in your area.

Benefit: This is a great opportunity for you to voice your experiences with the criminal justice system and to provide suggestions to make the system more responsive to the needs of sexual assault survivors.

Compensation: For your completion of the survey, you will be provided a $10 gift card to your choice of three stores (Target, Walmart, or Giant). In order to receive this gift card, you must continue to the end of the survey. At which time, you will be redirected to a separate website in order to provide your choice, as well as your contact information to send the gift card. This information will be maintained in a confidential, secure, password protected file, and kept separate from your survey, so your individual responses will remain anonymous.

Contact:  If you have any questions regarding participation, please feel free to contact Michiko Iwasaki, Ph.D. at miwasaki@loyola.edu or Amy Henninger, M.S at alhenninger@loyola.edu  If you have questions regarding your rights as a participant in research, please feel free to contact Ms. Nancy Dufau at the Campus Institutional Review Board of Loyola University Maryland at NDufau@loyola.edu
