    Hello,

My apologies to those who have been unable to access the recording of the mid-year panel. The file was moved to another server. Here's the link:

    Hi All,

First, let me say what a pleasure it is to work with such a magnanimous group of people, who have reached into their own pockets to cover the division's shortfall. The EC never fail to impress me with its generosity!  I would like to suggest another way in which you might be able to help the division, financially, through your relationships with book reps/publishers or with publishers who are trying to build a relationship with you - we all get a boatload of marketing emails from publishers, so why not use these as an opportunity to get support for GDO (and they get some visibility in the process, too, so it's win-win)?  I'm pasting a modified version of the text of a message I sent to McGraw-Hill in response to a marketing solicitation they sent me... which resulted in their support of the division.  I would like to encourage everyone to do the same (or, if you have an established relationship with a book rep, reach out to him/her in a similar fashion), particularly those who have not been able to get support from your institution.

    -------
I am on the Executive Committee of the Gender and Diversity Division of the Academy of Management, our field's primary professional association.  As part of my role on this committee, I'm involved with the division's fundraising efforts.  Historically, much of the sponsorship we've received has been from publishers.  Toward that end, I am writing to see if {Publisher Name} would be gracious enough to provide financial support to the Gender and Diversity in Organizations Division this year.  Although we would certainly be grateful for any amount, publishers typically donate between $1,000 - $2,000, as contributions over $1,000 provide for greater recognition and acknowledgment of the sponsor during our conference events.   Other publishers have provided support, but as a small division, we are hoping to expand our pool of sponsors.

If you are not the appropriate person to ask, I would be very grateful, if you could direct me to someone who would be able to discuss sponsoring our division.  Thanks very much for your help.

    Best wishes,

Apologies for what may potentially be a dumb question as I've been out of the loop for a bit...what happened and why do we have a deficit? I don't recall seeing a discussion here. Is there a document I can read somewhere summarizing the problem.

    Hi Robyn (and EC),

That was not a dumb question, at all.  I should clarify that we do not have a deficit.  The shortfall to which Patrick referred is a shortfall in revenue, relative to what we typically raise through the EC.  This pool of money fluctuates from year to year, based on EC members' comfort level asking their deans and deans' responses to those who ask (which is heavily driven by their budgets - when they say, "no," it is generally due to inability; not to unwillingness).  The decrease between this year and last came on the tails of another decrease between 2015 and 2016.  We were at $5,575 at the time Patrick sent his message; I am happy to report that through everyone's generosity, we have raised another $1,300 - a huge THANK YOU to this group!!!

On the other side of the equation, our catering expenses in Anaheim (one of the most expensive cities for a conference) were about 50% higher than they were in Vancouver (a very inexpensive locale, particularly given the exchange rate at that time).  So, while we are very much in the black, I want to make sure that our operating budget bounces back to where it was, pre-DisneyWorld.  I'm attaching the slides I presented at last year's conference; we haven't ordered our catering for Atlanta yet, so I don't have any estimated 2017 expense info, though I'm confident it will be much lower than last year, bc Atlanta is far less expensive than Anaheim and we are not hosting a doctoral consortium this year.

    Best,
    Caren
