Dear GDO colleagues
On behalf of the Gender and Diversity in Organizations Division (GDO) I extend a warm invitation to colleagues to submit paper and symposia submissions for the 2018 Academy of Management meeting in Chicago, August 10-14, 2018. For specific information about this year's theme, visit the AOM Annual Meeting Website.
GDO Mission: To generate and disseminate knowledge about gender and diversity within and outside of organizations, to embrace diverse perspectives in organizational research and education, and to support social justice through the inclusion of marginalized voices in members' research and practice.
Our 2018 theme "Improving Lives" asks the questions: How can organizations contribute to the betterment of society through elevating the health and well-being of those who live in it? What role can organizations play in positively affecting the physical, psychological, social and financial health of individuals, groups, communities, countries, regions or global society?
Our work in GDO related topics is particularly relevant to exploring these questions, particularly in a time of rising inequality and the wider concerns expressed by members over the past 12 months about current political and societal climates and the costs of exclusion. As teachers/scholars/practitioners in the wide ranging field of diversity and inclusion, this theme provides us with the opportunity to explore how our work can positively impact on the well-being of those most vulnerable.
As articulated in our domain statement, areas of interest may include, but certainly are not limited to: the impact of group diversity on well-being and effectiveness at individual, group, and organizational levels of analysis; the impact of occupational and organizational structures on marginalized and dominant groups; experiences of members of different social groups, including (but not limited to) groups differentiated by gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, nationality, religion, culture, (dis)ability, and age; the impact of organizational policies, practices, and discourses on dominant and marginalized groups, including critical examination of seemingly neutral assumptions underlying such policies, practices, and discourses, and their differential impact on these groups; the intersection of work, family, and community in relation to one's social position and well-being; institutional and structural barriers to equality and equity across social groups; processes of change that create and foster inclusion, whether from external interventions or from individuals within groups or organizations; the impact of cultural, societal, and national diversity on workers and the workplace.
I encourage you to think both broadly and deeply about how the theme may apply to your work. As well, please consider how your work connects with other divisions. It is always exciting to see how work founded within the GDO space connects with other divisions, and for this year's theme of Improving Lives, there is rich potential.
The GDO Division celebrates the high quality of our conference papers through the annual Division awards of: Dorothy Harlow Best Paper Award; Best Paper based on a Dissertation Award; Best Student Paper Award and a Transnational Research Best Paper Award.
Please feel free to reach out to me to discuss an idea for a symposium or a paper. Given time constraints, it would be best to so before December 20 2017.
The submission system opens: Thursday, November 23, 2017 and the submission deadline is Thursday, January 9, 2017 at 5pm ET (New York Time). Earlier submissions are encouraged. Note that there is limited space on the scholarly program; consequently not all submissions will be accepted.
... And please remember to sign up NOW to review for the GDO Division at http://review.aom.org/. The review period is from January 18 to February 15, 2018.
Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season and I look forward to seeing you in Chicago next year!
Regards
Alison
