Hi.  We are reviewing and revising our diversity elective, and I'm curious as to what titles others use for diversity/Inclusion courses.

Please share!  You can reply directly to me at tmaclean@suffolk.edu rather than the list, unless there's more general interest in this.

    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Tammy,

At the Huddersfield University, I designed and taught this course: "Managing diversity and inclusion" which primarily drew on the textbook that Mustafa Ozbilgin and I co-edited on the same topic.

    Hi Tammy,

We faced a similar situation at Brandeis a couple of years ago. I suggested the title "Leading in the Era of Diversity," and it was adopted by my colleague who is teaching the course.

  • 12.  Diversity course titles

    Posted 01-19-2018 08:51

    Dear Tammy,

We started a unique full-time 11 months management program at our school for experienced women who have been on a break and now wish to return to their corporate careers. I have designed and taught a course on 'Women leaders in organizations' in three parts for the all women participants of this program. Broadly the 3 part courses are titled as below:

Empowering Self: The course facilitates in deconstructing one's core identity and leverages one's values, beliefs and articulate personal vision. It also aims to help the participants understand the emotional re-alignment needed to achieve that vision and set out a personal road-map.

Gender & Leadership: The course provides an opportunity to reflect on one's leadership potential, internalized constraints, and future directions for a richer, more fulfilling, and meaningful career. Using experiential learning the sessions aim to enhance leadership capacities while identifying gender entrapments that constrain one's potential. The course encourages participants to recognise their inner strength and wisdom that would guide them to navigate their career matrices in the complex world of business.

Gender & Organizations: The third and concluding part of the course provides a macro view of gender and work to help the participants develop a holistic perspective of women's location with respect to the national economy, society and organizations. The course aims to facilitate a shared understanding of the participants, as future leaders and change agents about what it takes to enhance work and leadership opportunities for themselves and other women in their respective eco-systems. The sessions are designed to aid the participants visualize their own future self as a role model.

I am presently designing a diversity elective for the 2 year and 1 year MBA programmes that would incorporate the essence of the three parts discussed above and I plan to call it 'Gender balance in organizations'. I am interested to learn about what others are doing in this area.

    Kind regards

"Diversity and Inclusion" at the grad level.

    It is the same course.

    Hope this helps,

Thanks for mentioning my book. The fifth edition of my other book, Women and Men in Management, will be available this summer. I use this book to cover gender issues in my diversity courses, and supplementary materials to cover other dimensions of diversity (race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, religion, etc.).

  • 21.  Diversity course titles

    Tammy and all,

Thanks for the question, Tammy, and thanks to everyone who has responded. It's interesting to see the range of titles and number of courses. When I put together the AACSB Resource Guide for Teaching and Research on Diversity in 1992-1993, there were not this many!

I taught "Diversity in Organizations" and "Cultural Diversity in Organizations" for about 30 years, at the graduate level, to masters and doctoral students in organizational psychology. Also taught an elective for leadership doctoral students called "Cultural Intelligence," thought I don't like that name for the course.

In terms of books, there are many, and the choices are growing. Check out my edited collection: Diversity at Work: The Practice of Inclusion (Wiley, 2014). Table of contents and link to first chapter available at http://practiceofinclusion.com.  Also see Roberts, Wooten, & Davidson's Positive Organizing in a Global Society (Routledge).

It would be great if folks would post the syllabi on GDO's website Teaching Resources section. I've attached the latest version of mine here, for those who are interested.

    Best,

    Bernardo

P.S. For those who are curious about my affiliation, I just left Alliant International University in December, after almost 25 years, and will be focusing, at least for now, on full-time practice: consulting, coaching, leadership development, primarily in the areas of inclusion and diversity. Also, look out in 2019 for a new edited book on inclusive leadership (now in preparation).

Hi.  We are reviewing and revising our diversity elective, and I'm curious as to what titles others use for diversity/Inclusion courses.

Please share!  You can reply directly to me at tmaclean@suffolk.edu rather than the list, unless there's more general interest in this.

    Thank you in advance.

Thank you Bernardo, and to all who replied.  Most if not all of the replies were to the list, so I will not be compiling.

I'd be very psyched to see some other syllabi as well.

We are in the process of combining our Cross-cultural Management class with our Diversity at Work elective and transforming them into a required management major elective with the title Managing Across Differences.  I envision it will be 75% div/inclusion and 25% cross-cultural.  Will share the syllabus when it's complete, and hope to see others either shared to the list or to the GDO website.

    Have a good weekend.
