    Dear Robyn,

I would like to thank you for your email and would ask that you send the
following message from us at Virginia Tech to our colleagues at the Academy.
It has been written by Rick Perdue, our HTM Department Head here at the
Pamplin College of Business, and I am sure mirrors the thoughts of all faculty
    here.

    Best Regards,

    Sue Murrmann

Hello Hospitality Industry Friends and Colleagues

Please accept our apologies for this general e-mail as it is impossible both
physically and emotionally to reply individually to the hundreds of e-mails
and messages we have been receiving over the past 48 hours. Please also accept
my apologies for duplicate e-mails and listings as I'm trying to contact the
many different academic and industry groups with whom we work. Also, please
share this within your company as I'm sure I've missed people that I want to
    see this.

The faculty and staff in the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management
want to sincerely thank you for the outpouring of concern and support you've
shown to Virginia Tech and to our department. To my knowledge none of the
Hospitality and Tourism Management students or faculty were injured or killed
in Monday's shooting on our campus. However, all of us know somebody that
was, for that is the nature of our Virginia Tech community. As you have
watched the news coverage, I'm sure you've been impressed with the maturity
and quality of our students as they attempt to answer endless questions while
at the same time dealing with unspeakable horror and sadness. These are the
young adults we have the privilege of teaching. Over the weeks and months
ahead, many of them will need our help. Please keep them in your prayers and
    thoughts.

Below is the body of an e-mail that I sent to them yesterday. Hopefully, it
adequately expresses the complexity of emotions we are experiencing. .

    Sincerely,

    Rick Perdue

Hello HTM Students, Faculty and Staff

Over the past 24 hours, I've received hundreds of e-mails and phone calls from
friends and colleagues throughout the world, each of them expressing shock,
dismay, and horror over the yesterday's tragedy. Each of them also expresses
their support as we begin the process of healing and moving forward.

Over the last 48 hours, I've experienced an unbelievable range of emotions and
feelings about our program and university. Sunday evening I attended the
Pamplin Awards Banquet and had the opportunity to give awards and scholarships
to many of our finest students. I met many of your parents and experienced
their pride in their sons and daughters and in our university. When I left
the awards banquet, I felt so good about our students, our program and our
University. 18 hours later I reacted with shock and horror to events on the
    same campus.

Please know that Virginia Tech is still the safe, wonderful learning
environment that it was on Sunday evening. As we all know, yesterday's events
could happen anywhere. We will probably never know "why Virginia Tech".

Each of us will deal with our grief and sadness in different ways. Please
know that everybody is hurting and please understand our differences in
    behavior.

Please try to stay healthy, eat and exercise. Talk to each other. If you
would like to talk with me, please just stop by the office.

Most importantly, express your love to your family and friends.

    Rick Perdue

As the death toll increases at Virginia Tech, I'd like to personally offer my
condolences and best wishes to our colleagues there. It is a tragic event
    that never should have happened.

You are in my thoughts and prayers...Robyn Berkley
