    Greetings colleagues,

A meta-analysis of the research on attitudes toward affirmative action
has recently been accepted for publication at JAP. The citation and
abstract are given below. If you'd like a pdf copy, just let me know.

Harrison, David A., Kravitz, David A., Mayer, David M., Leslie, Lisa M.,
& Lev-Arey, Dalit. (in press). Understanding attitudes toward
affirmative action programs in employment: Addressing reactions to
redressing discrimination. Journal of Applied Psychology.

ABSTRACT: Affirmative action programs (AAPs) are controversial
employment policies in the U.S. and elsewhere. A large body of evidence
about attitudinal reactions to AAPs in employment has accumulated: at
least 126 independent samples involving 29,000 people. However, findings
have not been firmly established or integrated. In the current paper, we
summarize and meta-analytically estimate relationships of AAP attitudes
with (a) structural features of such programs, (b) perceiver demographic
and psychological characteristics, (c) interactions of structural
features with perceiver characteristics, and (d) presentation of AAP
details to perceivers, including justification of the AAP. Results are
generally consistent with predictions derived from self-interest
considerations, organizational justice theory, and racism theories. They
also suggest practical ways in which AAPs might be designed and
communicated to employees to reduce attitudinal resistance.

On a different issue - the following web site might interest you. It
describes the "One Human Family" foundation. ONE HUMAN FAMILY is the
official philosophy of Key West (my home town) and the foundation
provides small bumper stickers for the cost of postage. They've
disseminated over 600,000 so far. I've obtained a couple hundred and
plan to offer them to local colleagues and to the students in my class
on Diversity in Organizations. I'll also bring some to the AOM meeting
in August - especially for participants in the PDW on teaching diversity.

I hope you all have had a great break and the new semester treats you right.

    Best,
    David
