Stream Theme:
"Gender" and "diversity" as topics in organization and management theory,
research, and practice have acquired particular importance in recent
years. While "gender" has been a topic of interest for more than 30 years,
originally associated with issues of equality and fairness for women in
organizations and management, this topic is now increasingly associated
with issues of "gendering" as a situated social practice involved in modes
of organizing as well as in identity formation of organizational members.
In this sense, "gendering" is a social process that can be observed in
practices and relationships among organizational members instead of simply
addressed as a property of individuals, "women" or "men". "Diversity", as
a more recent topic of interest in organization and management theory and
practice, seems to have become a very wide umbrella-term. It may refer to,
among other topics, ethnic and racial differences, to multiculturalism, to
issues of immigrant populations, as well as also incorporating gender and
sexuality.
At this time, it is important to consider how variations in the meanings
and approaches to these topics, including ontological and epistemological
variations over time and location, are reflections of changing conditions
in a globalizing world. These conditions require rethinking known
conceptualizations as well as production of newer ones to be able to
understand and explicate emerging organizational and management phenomena
in changed social, cultural, and economic circumstances. Thus, considering
globalization as our contemporary context, this stream invites papers
reflecting on possibilities for new organization and management theory and
research that may emanate from critical notions of "gender" and
"diversity" as conceptual starting points.

Submission Guidelines and Selection Process for this Stream:
Extended abstracts of about 800 words should be submitted via email
attachment to all conveners of this stream:
marta@mgmt.umass.edu,
smircich@mgmt.umass.edu,
Regine.Bendl@wu-wien.ac.at
no later than March 15, 2006. Submissions for this workshop are primarily
intended for discussion and exchange of ideas for future research and
theory development. Therefore, it is acceptable to submit abstracts
related to papers or symposia that were already submitted to the 2006
Academy of Management meetings. To maximize discussion and exchange of
ideas, at most 15 abstracts will be selected based on their intended
contribution to the theme of this stream. On April 15, 2006, authors of
selected abstracts will be invited to submit full discussion papers.
Deadline for submission of discussion papers to conveners is June 15,
2006.
