Hi Everyone:
Thought you should know about three eye-opening and helpful booklets written by national diversity consultant JoAnn Moody.
1. "Rising Above Cognitive Errors: Guidelines for Search, Tenure Review, and other Evaluation Committees" (40 pages; $8 each for orders over 25) is often featured in retreats for dept. chairs (both new and experienced) and in preparatory sessions for search and other evaluation committees. The publication clearly shows that "contaminants" and negative and positive biases frequently mar evaluation processes--and result in the disproportionate **shortchanging** of women and under-represented minorities. Fourteen errors are illustrated, with remedial steps for both organizations and individuals.
2. "Demystifying the Profession: Helping Junior Faculty Succeed" (30 pages; $7 each for orders over 25) is often used in sessions with new and pre-tenure faculty and also in training of mentors in mentoring programs. The publication spotlights typical stresses experienced by faculty newcomers as well as strategies for reducing them. This is an important document for improving retention esp. of women and minority faculty and "solos."
3. "Vital Info for Women and Under-Represented Graduate Students" (20 pages; $5 each for orders over 25) contains candid insights from students, advisors, and mentors. The author coaches students on how to: Secure Mentors; Form Support and Study Groups; Build Professional Support Networks; Learn to be your own Advocate and Manager; Maintain Personal Integrity and Cultural Pride. An important section explains how vulnerable students and their advisors and instructors can reduce stereotype threat in academia.
