Teaching About Managing Work-Family-Life Integration As A Leadership
    Competency 8/13/2006 10:00 AM -12:00:PM Hyatt Regency
Atlanta Piedmont Room Atlanta Conference Center

Please come to an exciting PDW session. There are a few spaces left.
Interested participants should please email kossek@msu.edu so that we
    may prepare enough handouts.

The goal of this session is to help participants develop new
understanding and tools that will enable them to integrate the teaching
of management of work-life-family integration and workplace flexibility
policies and practices as a leadership competency. The session will be
interactive and focused on helping people walk away with and
understanding of several class designs, exercises, and ideas on how to
teach these issues in the standard business school curriculum. After
participant introductions and a brief overview, several different
teaching classes will be demonstrated and debriefed by leading work and
family and management experts. Stewart Friedman will share how he
teaches about leading in all domains of life and his total leadership
approach from Wharton Business School. Ellen Ernst Kossek from Michigan
State University School of Labor and Industrial Relations will share
some teaching materials about managing flexibility and organizational
work-life strategies. Kossek's session will draw in part from an Alfred
    P. Sloan study on managing professionals in new work forms that she and
Mary Dean Lee of McGill University have just finished and a study on
managing teleworkers that has also been recently completed (Kossek,
Lautsch, & Eaton, 2005). As time permits, the session will close with
discussion of possible change strategies for getting more work-life
material integrated into employer and business school cultures as a
mainstream issue, and sharing of how participants might envision using
these modules in their courses at their institutions.
