Dear GDO Members:

I hope your fall terms have started off well and that you're now ready to sign up for some GDO committees. Please take a look at the opportunities below and let me know by <st1:date month="10" day="1" year="2006">10/1/06</st1:date> if you are willing and able to serve the division on one of the committees. If you've already sent an e-mail, please send another one to confirm your continued interest and willingness to serve. In your e-mail, please put down at least two committees you would be willing to serve on as this will help even out the workload and increase chances of assignment to one. (I promise I will not assign you to more than one!)

I am staffing 3 or 4 member committees for:

    1. Sage Award for Scholarly Contributions to Management. Requires several weeks of work beginning in early to mid-spring 2007 reviewing nominations and working with the committee and chair to select the award winner. (See by-laws, online, for more details).

    2. Sage Dissertation Award. Requires several weeks work in early to mid-spring 2007 reviewing selected papers and working with the committee and chair to select the award winner. (See by-laws, online, for more details).

    3. Dorothy Harlow Best Paper Award. Requires several weeks work in early to mid-spring 2007 reviewing selected papers and working with the committee and chair to select the award winner. (See by-laws, online, for more details).

    4. Janet Chusmir Service Award. Requires several weeks work in early to mid-spring 2007 reviewing nominations and working with the committee and chair to select the award winner. (See by-laws, online, for more details).

    5. Best Student Paper Award. This is a new award funded by Emerald Publishers that will require several weeks work reviewing selected papers and working with the committee and chair to select the award winner.

    6. Membership Committee. This committee works to attract new members and welcomes new members into GDO throughout the year.

I have separated the prior committees from the mission and domain statement change committee and the web-master and newsletter editor positions because the latter three require a greater time commitment.

    7. Mission and Domain Statement Change Committee. This is a new and very important committee to update the mission and domain statements (last revised in 8/00) to more accurately reflect what GDO does. This committee will continue and complete work already begun on this change (many thanks to Lotte Bailyn), through getting approval from other divisions and taking a vote to the membership in spring, 2007.

As discussed in the business meeting, I am also soliciting a new Web-Master and Newsletter Editor. Brief job descriptions follow. Please send an e-mail detailing your skills, experience, and background for the position of interest. If you have questions about the position, you may contact Ron Ophir (ophir@yorku.ca) for the Web-Master position and Susan Stewart (sstewart@ups.edu) for the newsletter position. The Web-Master and Newsletter Editors are generally two-year positions. Many thanks to Ron and Susan for serving in these positions for the past few years.

    Web-Master Brief Job Description:

The Web-Master is responsible for updating and enhancing the GDO web-site on the Academy of Management page. Timely inclusion of relevant news items, resources, links, and calls-for-papers are some of the requirements. The web-master should work to enhance the appearance of the GDO web-site and ensure its functionality, attractiveness, and accuracy. Some exposure to programming languages and methods needed. Past web-master experience helpful.

    Newsletter Editor Brief Job Description:

The Newsletter Editor is responsible for the solicitation, compilation, and publication of relevant news items and for enhancing the appearance of, attractiveness, and diversity of news items published. S/he works closely with the GDO Division Chair and Executive Committee members, as well as division members, in an effort to compile and communicate newsworthy items, including articles, announcements, and activities in the newsletter. Three times a year (typically in fall, spring, and summer), the Newsletter Editor solicits, gathers, and organizes news items and assembles/publishes the GDO newsletter. The final newsletter is sent to all GDO members and published on the GDO website. Past experience helpful.

I look forward to hearing from you and will work to see that as people as possible who are interested in serving on a committee have an opportunity to do so. Jan Cleveland, our program chair, will appreciate our all serving as reviewers for the 2007 program, of course.

I look forward to an exciting and productive year in the division.

    Warm Regards,

    Myrtle
