  • 1.  Conference on diversity teaching & training

    Posted 02-20-2007 16:24
    Greetings colleagues,

As I hope you know, Myrtle Bell and I are editing a special issue of the
/Academy of Management Learning and Education/ journal. The focus will
be diversity education and training. This has stimulated me organize a
conference this summer on the same topic. I expect the participants will
include educators and scholars interested in diversity education, along
with practitioners involved in diversity training. Activities will
include a combination of presentations and group discussions about
topics of mutual interest. The goals include: (a) Provide participants
with information that will improve their diversity classes. (b) Provide
participants (presenters) with feedback on their research (which should
be particularly useful for those preparing papers for submission to the
special issue). (c) Stimulate connections between academic
teachers/scholars and diversity trainers, so the former can increase the
relevance of their research and the latter can base their training on
    empirical results.

I will have support from Rich Klimoski, Dean of the School of Management
at GMU, and other sources to cover most of the expenses (e.g., meals,
meeting rooms, technology). I have already received strong corporate
interest in this initiative due to the very real need for this dialogue.
Participants would be responsible for their own transportation and
housing, but campus housing (probably suites in which two bedrooms share
a bath) may be available for around $100 for two nights. Local
accommodations in hotels could be arranged, if this is the preferred
    alternative.

My current thinking is that the conference will begin with a reception
on a Friday evening, continue with paper sessions and discussions
through Saturday, and conclude with more paper sessions and discussions
at least until lunch on Sunday. Some participants might choose to remain
through Sunday afternoon to work with others on their /AMLE/ submissions.

Timing is an issue. If the conference is to offer an opportunity for
potential contributors to the /AMLE/ special issue to receive feedback
on their papers, it will need to occur over the summer. The Academy of
Management meeting is August 3 through 8. Thus, I’m thinking some time
between June 15 and July 15 would be best. SHRM has its major conference
June 22 through 27, which poses a constraint, as does the July 4
holiday. Thus, the first weekend (June 15 – 17) or the last (July 13 –
    15) might be best.

I am sending out this e-mail to ascertain the level of interest for
planning purposes. IF you are potentially interested in participating in
this meeting, please respond to me (dkravitz@gmu.edu
    <mailto:dkravitz@gmu.edu>) with the following information:

Are any dates between June 15 and July 15 particularly good or bad?
Specifically, do you know of any other conferences during that time that
    would draw participants away?

How important is access to inexpensive campus housing for you? Would
    this determine your presence?

How likely is it that you would attend?

    Many thanks,

    David

    David,

    What a wonderful idea.

The Organizational Behavior Teaching Conference is June 13-16 at
Pepperdine in Malibu. There might be overlap among individuals
interested in diversity pedagogy for the two conferences.

FYI, information about that conference can be found at

YES, I'd be interested if we could piggyback with the OBTC...I'll be there

    Hi all,

Apparently the suggestion that I piggyback our conference on diversity
teaching and training with OBTC is popular. It's not going to happen.
The diversity conference is being sponsored by GMU and will be held at
GMU, not at the other end of the country.
