    DIRECTOR, INTERNATIONAL AND MULTICULTURAL INITIATIVES (I-MERIT)

    ALLIANT INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY


    POSITION TITLE: Director, International and Multicultural Initiatives
    (I-MERIT)

    DEPARTMENT: Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic
    Affairs

    LOCATION: Fresno, Los Angeles, San Diego or San Francisco,

    REPORTS TO: Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

    EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-time, Exempt


    Alliant International University, the Professional Practice UniversityTM,
    provides broad access to innovative and culturally relevant professional
    training in the applied social sciences aimed at improving the quality of
    human life. Degree programs (primarily at the graduate level) are offered
    on six campuses throughout California, a campus in Mexico City campus, in
    Hong Kong and in Tokyo, Japan. Multicultural and international diversity
    are core University values, and as such feature prominently in Alliant's
    curriculum, along with community service internships and work placements.

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    Alliant seeks an outstanding professional to lead its
    multicultural-international initiatives, in collaboration with the I-MERIT
    Associate Director. The name given to this set of programs is I-MERIT, which
    stands for International-Multicultural Education Research Intervention and
    Training. Each of Alliant's two legacy institutions, the California School
    of Professional Psychology (CSPP) and US International University was a
    pioneer, respectively, in multicultural and international education. CSPP
    was the first free-standing school of professional psychology and the first
    to address systematically the mental health needs of the underserved. USIU
    was one of the first American universities to bring students from all over
    the world to participate in an American-style education that was
    internationally focused. It was also the first to open American-style
    campuses all over the world.

    The I-MERIT Director will provide both moral and leadership oversight of the
    I-MERIT initiatives, collaborating as appropriate with the Associate
    Director. The Director will have a distinguished record of leadership in
    multicultural/international issues in education and/or business and will
    provide the academic leadership of the initiative. A record of significant
    achievement and of publications in relevant areas is desired. The candidate
    should have an earned doctoral degree in an area offered by the University
    and should qualify for a faculty appointment in one of our programs.

    The successful candidate will be dedicated to collegial and effective
    partnering with relevant internal and external offices, organizations and
    individuals. S/he will exhibit the highest professional standards and
    ethical principles and will be committed to Alliant's institutional missions
    and strategic goals and objectives.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The individual in this position will work broadly and collaboratively, as
    appropriate, both the Associate Director, with University faculty and with
    other key University officials and entities throughout the University to:

    1. Assures that I-MERIT goals, values and initiatives, as approved, are
    infused throughout the University and in all academic curricula. -- Working
    with the Provost/VPAA, the School/Center Deans/Directors, administrative
    Vice Presidents and other members of the President's Cabinet, the Director
    will assure that I-MERIT initiatives are implemented. These include core
    competencies the University has committed to for its faculty, staff and
    students in all of our locations.

    2. Help Obtain External Funding for I-MERIT Initiatives. - Set funding
    priorities to develop and sustain I-MERIT programs and initiatives. In
    conjunction with the Office of Development, identify, secure and steward new
    and existing external public and private grants and gift funds. Build and
    sustain relationships and funding streams with interested business and
    philanthropic leaders and organizations, as well as interested alumni.


    3. In conjunction with the Associate Director, co-chairs the I-MERIT
    Council to assure that the I-MERIT agenda is implemented and evaluated as to
    effectiveness.

    4. Serves as a chief spokesperson for multicultural/international
    issues at the University.


    5. In collaboration with the Associate Director, oversees I-MERIT
    initiatives across geographically dispersed programs, campuses and
    constituencies.

    6. Oversees Latino Achievement Project.


    POSITION REQUIREMENTS:


    Education: Doctoral degree in relevant area and academic achievements
    appropriate to a faculty appointment within the University.

    Experience: Ten years of progressive leadership experience preferably in
    a higher education setting focused on programs/initiatives supporting
    multicultural/international educational objectives.


    * Skills: Skills in managing complex projects to successful
    outcomes, research and analytical skills, fund raising (including obtaining
    grants), ability to lead and inspire institution in achieving its
    multicultural/international agenda, ability to work effectively and
    cooperatively with diverse constituencies, ability to achieve results under
    conditions of time urgency and ambiguity. Excellent skills in interpersonal
    relations and advocacy, and in written and oral communication. Demonstrated
    ability to craft effective institutional responses to complex student needs
    and issues. Ability to work collaboratively as a team player with
    institutional officials and educators at all levels in initiating and
    managing projects in a complex organizational environment. Demonstrated
    ability to work with students, faculty and staff and constituencies external
    to the University. Experience in fundraising and grants management
    preferred.
    * Other duties as assigned.


    * Supervision: Reports to Provost/VPAA and oversees the Associate
    Director, the I-MERIT Council, the Latino Achievement Project and (as
    developed) the Cultural Competence Institute.
