POSITION TITLE: Director, Latino/a Achievement Initiatives
DEPARTMENT: Office of the Provost and Vice President for

REPORTS TO: Director of International and Multicultural
Initiatives
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-time, Exempt
Alliant International University is the Professional Practice UniversityTM,
providing broad access to innovative and culturally relevant professional
training in the social sciences aimed at improving the quality of human
life. Degree programs (primarily at the graduate level) are offered on six
campuses throughout California, a campus in Mexico City campus and in Tokyo,
Japan. Multicultural and international diversity are core University
values, and as such feature prominently in Alliant's curriculum, along with
community service internships and work placements.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Alliant recently converted its four-year undergraduate program to a two-year
completion program and is partnering with community colleges throughout the
state to grow its undergraduate student population, particularly Latino/a
students, who are significantly underrepresented within higher education
nationally and in California. Alliant is addressing this critical gap
through the launch this academic year of the Latino/a Achievement
Initiatives ("LAI"), a multifaceted, multi-year program aimed at increasing
the number of Latino/a students successfully attending and completing
undergraduate and graduate academic programs.
The Director of the Latino/a Achievement Initiatives is a new staff position
reporting to the Director of International and Multicultural Initiatives
within the Office of the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. The
position also has a coordinating relationship to the Center for
Undergraduate Education with regard to recruitment of undergraduate
students, and to the Dean of Students Office for student affairs and
graduate student recruitment. S/he is responsible for coordinating programs
and relationships both externally in the public community and internally
within Alliant to prepare and attract both undergraduate and graduate
Latino/a students to the University, fostering an institutional environment
that enables them to thrive and succeed in completing their academic
programs.
The successful candidate will be dedicated to collegial and effective
partnering with relevant internal and external offices, organizations and
individuals. S/he will exhibit the highest professional standards and
ethical principles and will be committed to Alliant's institutional missions
and strategic goals and objectives.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The individual in this position will partner broadly and work
collaboratively, as appropriate, with other key University officials and
entities, including Latino/a faculty, staff and students, the Dean of
Students, the leadership of the University's Center for Undergraduate
Education, Deans/Directors of all Schools/Centers in the University, the
Vice President of Development, Marketing Directors of the Schools and
Centers, the Student Government Association, and others to:
1. Attract New Latino/a Students to Alliant - Strategize and help
implement effective outreach campaigns within the State and particularly
within California's Latino/a communities aimed at publicizing Alliant's
academic and community service presence and programs to attract new students
to the University. Assist in identifying and developing opportunities for
academic "pipeline"/feeder programs with schools, community colleges,
relevant community leaders and organizations in regions adjacent to Alliant
campuses in support of Latino/a higher education goals and objectives.
Strategize and integrate LAI-focused programs objectives into Alliant
marketing programs and initiatives.
2. Service the Needs of Alliant Latino/a Students - Establish and
administer an Office of Latino/a Student Affairs. Develop programming
within Alliant to meet the needs of currently enrolled Latino/a students and
engage Latino/a faculty and staff with the initiatives. Facilitate
development and oversight of Latino/a-focused student groups and
organizations.
3. Coordinate and Staff Alliant's Internal LAI Advisory Group.
Coordinate the LAI Advisory Committee and represent it effectively in
I-MERIT and throughout the University. Work with the Committee to assess on
an ongoing basis the effectiveness of Alliant's environment for Latino/a
students and coordinate effective institutional follow-up. Represent the LAI
and the interests and needs of Latino/a students effectively to internal
University and external public constituencies through meetings and events,
dissemination of materials, etc.
4. Help Obtain External Funding for Latino/a Initiatives - In
conjunction with the Office of Development, set funding priorities to
develop and sustain LAI programs and initiatives, identifying, securing and
stewarding new and existing external public and private grants and gift
funds, including renewal of Alliant's federal Title V grant. Build and
sustain relationships and funding streams with interested business and
philanthropic leaders and organizations, in part through the development and
management of systemwide and community-based Latino/a Achievement Advisory
Boards.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Master's Degree in relevant field is required. Doctoral
degree in area relevant to Alliant's academic programs a plus.
Experience: Five years of progressive leadership experience in a higher
education setting focused on programs/initiatives supporting success of
Latino/as in higher education.
Skills: Demonstrated working knowledge of and skills with
recruiting and retaining Latino/a students in relevant higher education
programs and with Latino/a organizations and communities. Demonstrated
understanding of factors contributing to the academic and personal success
of Latino/a students in mainstream higher education environments.
Demonstrated knowledge of higher education policies, programs and
procedures, especially as they relate to recruitment, admission and
retention of students of color, especially Latnio/as. Excellent skills in
interpersonal relations and advocacy, and in written and oral communication.
Bilingual in Spanish. Demonstrated ability to craft effective institutional
responses to complex student needs and issues. Ability to work
collaboratively as a team player with institutional officials and educators
at all levels in initiating and managing projects in a complex
organizational environment. Demonstrated ability to work with students,
faculty and staff and constituencies external to the University. Experience
in fundraising and grants management preferred.
