Michigan State University, one of the nation’s preeminent public
research universities, invites nominations and applications for the
position of Director of the School of Labor and Industrial Relations.
The School of Labor and Industrial Relations is a national leader in
human resource and industrial relations research and education. The
School, a tenure-granting academic unit, has 21 faculty members and 135
graduate students and offers a professional masters and a doctorate
degree in human resources and industrial relations. For over fifty
years, the faculty and staff of the SLIR have worked to combine the best
of graduate education and research with cutting edge outreach programs
offered to the management, labor, academic, and government communities.
The Director is the chief academic and administrative officer of the
School and responsible for the unit’s strategic vision, budgetary
oversight, academic programs, communication with internal and external
constituencies and externally funded research and development. The
School of Labor and Industrial Relations is located within the College
of Social Sciences. This is a full-time, 12-month position with the
salary being competitive, and commensurate with experience and
qualifications.
The candidate should be an authority in human resources or industrial
relations and should have the ability and interest to work effectively
with a diverse constituency, including faculty members from various
disciplines, labor and management groups, university administrators,
students, and alumni. A successful candidate will have a significant
record of scholarship, teaching, and externally sponsored research. They
will also have effective administrative and leadership skills, excellent
interpersonal skills, a commitment to diversity, and dedication to the
land grant mission. International experience or demonstrated interest in
international regions is an advantage. Candidates should have an earned
Ph.D. doctorate or other terminal degree in an appropriate discipline
and a record of achievement sufficient to merit appointment at the rank
of a tenured-full professor within the School.
Review of applications will start on December 1, 2007 and will continue
until a suitable candidate is chosen. The start date for the position is
