    Center for Work-Family Stress, Safety, and Health (an affiliate of the National Work, Family & Health Network) housed at The Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence at Purdue University

    PhD Candidate or Post Doctoral Candidate in Social Sciences, Management or related field

    January 2013 - December 2013 (dates negotiable); renewal possibility

     

    Dr. Ellen Ernst Kossek, incoming Research Director at The Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence and Basil S. Turner Professor of Management in the Krannert School of Management, is seeking a research associate and lead data analyst to join the National Institutes of Health and Center for Disease Control funded Work, Family & Health Network (WFHN) research team.  This individual will be part of a national team of researchers who are working to analyze data for the Center for Work-Family Stress, Safety and Health. The Center is an affiliate of the National Work, Family & Health Network and is a collaboration between Dr. Leslie Hammer of Portland State University and Dr. Ellen Kossek of Purdue University. The Work, Family & Health Network designs, implements and evaluates randomized field experiments that involve workplace interventions to reduce work-family conflict and improve employee and family health. The expected start date of this position is January 2013 with the potential for annual renewal.  The ideal candidate will be extremely well organized, both a self starter and team player, good communicator, detail oriented, and possess excellent analytical skills and able to work on multiple projects simultaneously.  Successful candidates will either have completed most of their coursework other than dissertation, or possess a PhD. in the social sciences, management or related area and possess strong statistical and computer statistics skills (e.g., SPSS, SAS, HLM). Qualitative data analysis skills, such as Atlas familiarity, are desirable, but not required. This is a full time position, but flexibility is possible if candidates are finishing up dissertation work or have other needs.  Some travel may be required.

    The job responsibilities of this position are as follows:

    Maintain center's database of data sets: This includes downloading data from WFHN websites, converting SAS files to SPSS files when necessary and maintaining a record of data set receipt.

    Run basic descriptive analyses and clean data: This includes writing SPSS syntax to run descriptive analyses and comparing the output WFHN outputs from SAS. Any discrepancies, outliers, or other issues are then presented on the Data User's Group call and resolved.

    Maintain codebooks: This includes updating the workplace measures section of the codebooks with any edits and adding descriptive analyses information for each wave and coordinating with other centers to ensure the most updated versions are available on a shared WFHN site.

    Create data sets:  This includes creating any custom data sets that individuals from the Portland State/Purdue Center may need to run analyses for manuscripts. Data sets are created by linking and merging different data files, keeping/dropping variables from the larger data sets, recoding and computing variables.

    Assist PI's with analyses for manuscripts:  This includes running and writing data reports on the variables of interest, and writing syntax in SPSS and/or SAS for more complex analyses.

    Attend and coordinate team conference calls and meetings, writing notes and communicating and following up on key issues in a timely manner.

    Desirable:  Assist with grant related administrative project work.  Ensure IRB reports are up to date on requirements, and assist with any other administration such as preparing abstracts for publications subcommittee, or contracts and grants updates and budget paperwork as needed.

    Desirable: Conduct research literature reviews and qualitative data analysis with Atlas.

    Possible: Assist with other Butler Center research projects.
