The Gender and Diversity in Organizations
Doctoral Student
Consortium is intended to introduce
doctoral students to the division and the field of diversity. Students will have the opportunity to meet division leaders; learn strategies for research and publishing in gender and diversity; receive job market advice; discuss teaching and research career balance; and discover ways to become involved in the division and the Academy.
Saturday, August 7 (8:30 AM - 4:00 PM)
Session 1: Welcome and Introduction of Participants
Panelists: Robyn Berkley and Joy Beatty, co-organizers
Includes continental breakfast, introductions and overview of the
consortium agenda.
Session 2: Getting Launched: Early Career Topics (9:00 - 10:30)
Panelists: Eden King, Jamie Ladge, Miguel Unzueta, David Zoogah
Panelists will share strategies for completing your dissertation, getting the first job, building good foundational research strategies, developing as a teacher, and how to prepare for the promotion and tenure process.
Session 3: Strategic Service: Getting involved from the beginning (10:45 - 11:30)
Panelists: Lynn Bowes-Sperry, Susan Kirby, David Kravitz
Panelists will give advice about service roles and getting involved strategically, along with outlines the range of services opportunities and discussing what kinds of service are best for early career academics.
Session 4:
GDO Member Match Exercise (11:30 - 12:00)
Consortium attendees will be assigned
GDO members to be their "buddy" for the remainder of the conference to provide informal mentorship opportunities
Session 5: Meet the Editor (12:00 - 12:30)
Panelist: Mustafa Özbilgin (British Journal of Management and Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion)
Editor Mustafa Özbilgin will discuss the journal review process and offer publishing advice from both the editor's and author's perspectives.
Shared Lunch with Careers Division
Doctoral Students (12:30 - 1:15)
Session 6: Navigating Mid-Career Topics: Achieving Balance and Growth (1:15 - 2:15)
Panelists: Gerardo Okhuysen, Amy Randel, Ian Williamson
Panelists will address topics relevant to mid-career, defined as post-tenure, including decisions and tradeoffs, work life balance, starting new research streams, teaching vs research and the role of service.
Session 7: Creating Significant Research: Research Panel and Roundtable Discussions (2:30 - 3:45)
Panelists: Derek Avery, Marta Calas, Jeff Greenhaus, Alison Konrad, Linda Smircich, Susan Vinnicombe
Panelists have been chosen because they are leaders in
GDO research. Panelists will share some brief remarks about their own work then provide strategies for developing and maintaining a productive research stream. Topics include: research collaboration, selecting topics and methods, managing time demands. Roundtable discussions will follow to allow students face to face time with the panelists for more specific research interest questions.
Session 8: Wrap up and Reflections

jebeatty@umd.umich.edu) and Dr. Robyn Berkley (
rberkle@siue.edu).
After approval, students will be given registration information to submit to the Academy registration system (RegOnline).Students must first register for the 2010 Annual Meeting before registering for the
GDO doctoral student
