    Dear Colleagues:

I hope that you can participate in the following PDW being offered at the upcoming Academy of Management Conference:

"Spanning the Great Divide:  Six Leadership Practices to Transform Limiting Borders

    into New Frontiers"

    Program Session #: 146 | Submission: 11114 | Sponsor(s): (GDO, OB)
    Friday, August 9, 2013 3:45 PM – 6:15 PM

at WDW Dolphin Resort Oceanic 6

The most important challenges we face today are interdependent – they can only be solved by groups working collaboratively.  For businesses, governments, organizations, and communities to solve problems and realize new opportunities, leaders must think and act beyond current group boundaries and identities.  Successful leaders in today's fast-paced global environment must develop the capacity to engage in boundary spanning leadership.

Based on a decade-long research project conducted by faculty affiliated with the Center for Creative Leadership involving six world regions and a database consisting of over 2,800 surveys and nearly 300 interviews, this workshop will give participants the opportunity to learn how to strategically span divides that often hinder collaboration and limit productivity.

The workshop will be interactive and consist of three phases.  During phase one (managing boundaries) participants will be assigned to a group (practitioners or scientists).  Groups will work independently to identify an ideal headline for an upcoming AoM newsletter.  The two groups will be merged during phase two (forging common ground) to identify a shared headline.  During phase three, the combined group will use its full potential for diversity and expertise to identify innovative solutions for collaborating across boundaries.

Participation will enable participants to: 1) understand and communicate across boundaries such as the one between scientists and practitioners within the Academy, 2) clarify roles and responsibilities for successful boundary spanning , 3) understand and apply three boundary spanning strategies to work across the scientist/practitioner boundary, and 4) gain practice using the six boundary spanning leadership practices.
