  • 1.  Call for Papers - Southwest Academy of Management

    Dear GDO Colleagues:
     
        I am writing to you because I am the track chair for the Human Resources track of the Southwest Academy of Management.  I encourage all of you to submit your work to this track.  I have pasted the Call for Papers below, and I am sure that you will note that there is no track dedicated to Gender and Diversity.  As a result, I am making it my personal project to solicit papers in this area, and I can assure you that your paper on gender or diversity will find a welcoming "home" in the Human Resources track--even if you do not see the paper as especially relevant to HR. 
     
        The deadline for submissions is October 3, although you must register as an author on the conference management system by October 1.  The conference itself will be held in Dallas from March 3 to March 6.  I am really very anxious to have a number of papers related to gender and diversity, so please consider submitting your work.  If you have questions, you may consult the Southwest Academy of Management (SWAM) website listed below or you may contact me (gbaugh@uwf.edu).  Thanks very much for your consideration!  --  Gayle

    Southwest Academy of Management Conference Highlights

    New Features (INDICATED WITH A “*”): SWAM Distinguished Scholars; Breakfast/Snack Roundtables &

    Debates; Saturday Survivors Breakfast with highlights from conference; Doctoral Student/Junior

    Faculty Consortia on Friday Morning

    Keynote Sessions will be one of the following: (Proposals Accepted!)

    Debates* between Distinguished Scholars where the “Best” or “Worst” of Times positions face off.

    Distinguished Scholars* presenting their take on the scholarship of teaching, research, or service.

    Senior Executives sharing where they feel comfortable still knowing what to do (the Best of times)

    or where they need help figuring out what now (the worst of times).

    Competitive papers sessions will be of one of the following:

    Traditional Presentations;

    Round Table Discussions where synthesis and insight will be reported out on Saturday morning during the

    new Sat. Survivors Breakfast* session.

    Poster Sessions* located near the coffee break areas to extend the informal networking within a track to

    informal discussions of papers.

    Professional Development Workshops* are interactive and require the following information:

    The demonstration of a teaching, research or service tool or exercise;

    The identification of appropriate Track/Subject application areas (IE STRATEGY, OB, OT, ETC.) ;

    Educational/research justification for the activities chosen and

    Will last either ½ of a regular session or a full session. Please indicate which timing is best for your workshop.

    Innovative Ideas are Encouraged: Proposals for special sessions (workshops, work-in-progress, etc.) should be

    detailed as soon as possible to permit evaluation. Please include a detailed description of the proposed session,

    indicating the participants, their roles, and evidence of their willingness to participate and send these proposals

    to the Program Chair, Janice Black at jblack14@csub.edu . As you can see, this year, we want to use the best

    of the past and …well…we are very willing to experiment with different session formats and … see if it will be the

    best or worst…!

    Mentoring Sessions for Working Papers is another example of a Professional Development Workshop:

    Authors with works-in-progress can meet one-on-one with an assigned mentor for suggestions on developing

    their work. Long Abstracts from authors and a current CV from potential mentors are both sought.

    Distinguished Paper Award: A Best Paper will be selected for each track, and from this group one paper will be

    selected for the Irwin/McGraw-Hill Distinguished Paper Award. A special team of reviewers will work with the

    authors so that this paper may be published in the Journal of Business Strategies.

    Outstanding Reviewer: An outstanding reviewer is identified for each track, and the Outstanding Reviewer for the

    conference will be identified from this group.

    Journal of Business Strategies: The Southwest Academy of Management is affiliated with the Journal of Business

    Strategies, which publishes articles on all fields related to business.

    Published Proceedings: Authors will be provided specifications for preparing their manuscripts after they are

    notified of acceptance. Publication in the CD Rom-based Proceedings does not preclude subsequent

    publication in other journals when proper acknowledgement is given.

    Doctoral Student Consortium: Doctoral students are invited to the doctoral student consortium on Friday morning

    for ½ day. In addition, scholarships are available to offset cost of attending for doctoral students with papers

    accepted for the conference and attending consortium. Please see the SWAM website (listed above) for details.

    Electronic Submissions Process: Submission website will open early this summer. You will find it at

    http://www.moodle.nmsu.edu/ocs . We will be using a NEW SUBMISSION PLATFORM and will have

    instructions available on the SWAM web-site. You will need to submit your paper to one of our Tracks!

    Policies and Instructions for Paper Submissions

    1. Competitive papers should be typed, single-spaced, with a space between paragraphs and two between sections and typically

    not more than 20 pages in length with embedded tables & figures and including references.

    2. Use CENTERED BOLD ALL CAPS for main headings and Left-justified Bold Title Format for secondary headings. Please

    use Arial Narrow 12 point font.

    3. The separate title page file should include the name, affiliation, address, and telephone number of all authors and the 150

    word abstract.

    4. The main body of the paper should have a title page with a 150-word abstract, but not the authors’ names. Papers will be

    double-blind reviewed.

    5. Papers should not have been previously published or presented. At least one of the authors of an accepted paper will be

    required to join FBD and the Southwest Academy of Management, register for the meeting, and personally present the

    paper.

    6. Submissions are limited to a maximum of three per individual author.

    7. SWAM fully subscribes to the ethical standards of the Academy of Management.

    8. It is the policy of the Southwest Academy of Management to be given first and full credit for all papers presented at its

    meeting. The Southwest Academy of Management will reject a paper that has been, or is scheduled to be, presented at

    another conference.

    9. Symposium proposals or proposals using an innovative format should be as detailed as possible in order to enhance the

    reviewers’ ability to evaluate the proposal. Indicate all session participants, their roles, and provide evidence of willingness

    to participate.

    Classic Track Titles

    1. Strategy (BPS)

    These are reports of scholarly research in the fields of strategy, strategic leadership, and international

    management.

    2. Entrepreneurship & Small Business (ENT)

    These are reports of scholarly research in the fields of entrepreneurship, small business management, and

    consulting.

    3. Organization Theory (OT)

    These are reports of scholarly research in the fields of organization theory, organization development and change,

    operations management, management information systems, and other macro or system-level concepts.

    4. Organizational Behavior (OB)

    These are reports of scholarly research in the fields of organizational behavior, organization communications, and

    other micro concepts.

    5. General Management (GEN) These are all cross level orientations that include but are not limited to

    industry specific orientations like health care; philosophical orientations like sustainable business or diversity

    issues; and leadership.

    6. Human Resources (HR) These are all reports of scholarly research in the fields of human resources, careers

    and training.

    7. Scholarship of Teaching, Research and Service (STRS) These are all reports of scholarly

    research in our field of practice including tried and tested exercises; reflections on experiences; essays on future

    directions; and refreshers/updates on classic cases.

    8. Professional Development Workshops (PDW)

    These are workshops that illustrate successful practices in each area of our work including teaching workshops;

    research development workshops; the developmental papers; and service workshops.

    9 Doctoral & Junior Faculty Consortium This is a short half –day professional development workshop

    open to doctoral students and junior faculty who are not yet tenured.

    I am reminding you again of the deadline for submission of papers to the Southwest Academy of Management (a regional affiliate of the Academy of Management).   While I would prefer to send you the actual Call for Submissions, I am instead going to send you the link to the Southwest Academy's website, where you can find the Call for Submissions.  The space requirements for this listserv are such that the Call cannot be copied into the message.  I don't want to send the Call as an attachment because some e-mail programs strip off attachments  and/or send the message to "SPAM."  So here's the web address:

    The deadline for submissions for the conference is October 1 (coming up soon!) and the conference itself will be held in Houston from March to to March 12.  Houston is a great city and the Southwest is a wonderful, warm organization.  I hope that you will consider submitting your work to the HR track (I'm the track chair, and the track includes gender and diversity and careers), but I'll be happy if you just submit work to some track for the Southwest Academy meeting.  Thanks!  --  Gayle

  • 3.  Call for Papers - Southwest Academy of Management

    Dear GDO Colleagues:
     
    I know that those of us in the U.S. are enjoying the Labor Day week-end--and what better way of celebrating than working--especially on a submission for the Southwest Academy of Management?  Well, okay, maybe it's not the best way to celebrate, and maybe you don't have a Labor Day holiday in your part of the world, but please consider submitting a paper.  The Call for Papers is attached to this message and the deadline is September 16, 2011.  The Southwest Academy of Management has not had a lot of papers in the area of Gender and Diversity in Organizations, and I would like to change that situation!  I know that there's a lot of good work that could be appropriate for this conference.
     
    I am especially interested in encouraging you to submit papers that are still sort of "in process."  While the Southwest Academy does not accept abstracts or simply incomplete papers, we would like to encourage you to submit papers that you would consider still in development.  That is, if you have a paper that is causing you some concern with respect to framing, analysis, or just finding the appropriate publication outlet, please consider the Developmental Track of the Southwest Academy of Management.  You submit the paper that's raising questions that you're not sure how to answer, and we'll match you up with a paper mentor.  You will have a one-on-one conversation with your paper mentor, who will discuss with you the possibilities for your paper.  We think that this approach is better than accepting the paper for presentation in a session because it allows you to discuss your questions and concerns one-on-one.  However, the "tone" of the conference is one of support and assistance (hey, our slogan is "Crafting the Whole Professor"), so you may have more assistance than you expect! 
     
    And if you're interested in volunteering to be a paper mentor (I hope that I'll need lots of them!), please contact me directly (gbaugh@uwf.edu). 
    I can't offer anything but my eternal gratitude and the opportunity to offer developmental comments on a potentially great paper, but those are pretty good rewards.
     
    Oh, and did I mention that the conference itself will be held at the beginning of March in NEW ORLEANS?  I'm hoping that the time and location will be an incentive to attend the meeting, as well!
     
    Please consider submitting your work to the Southwest Academy of Management or volunteering to review for the conference (both can be accomplished at the conference website--please see the Call for Papers, attached).  But if you want to volunteer as a paper mentor, please contact me directly.  I'll be really happy to hear from you!  --  Gayle
