LGBTQ Teaching Incubator: Care, Dare, Share
A Montréal 2010 PDW
Saturday, August 7, 2010
4:15PM - 6:15PM
Le Centre Sheraton (Salon 7)
As diversity scholars and educators we CARE about making our classroom accessible and inclusive to all. Have you DARED to include teaching materials that are inclusive of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and/or queer-identified (LGBTQ) employees? Now it is time to SHARE your experiences.
You are invited to join us to discuss concrete ideas or cases/exercises that you have used or would like to develop or adapt, and be part of an effort to build a repository of materials that can be used in the classroom that would challenge the heteronormative classroom discourse and make for a more LGBTQ-inclusive learning environment. Participants will be asked to submit brief summaries of teaching materials (cases, activities, exercises) for sharing with others:
materials that they have used or developed that are already LGBTQ-inclusive, including notes on why the think they represent a good example for LGBTQ-inclusiveness, how they would recommend using the materials, and any concerns about using the materials that they would like to discuss and address in the small groups. Such materials may explicitly deal with LGBTQ issues or at a minimum not be based on heteronormative assumptions;
and/or materials that they would like to adopt and make more LGBTQ-friendly and inclusive (or ideas they would like to develop further), in which case they would outline their challenges with adapting the materials.
These materials will then be gathered and redistributed to the registered participants in advance of the meeting, so that everyone can prepare the shared materials for discussion.
Excited? We hope so. To register please send a 2-3 sentences statement of intent (what you think you will be bringing to the table) to Robyn Berkeley (
rberkle@siue.edu
) and Ron Ophir (
ophir@yorku.ca
). You will receive an access code to complete the registration on-line.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Robyn and Ron
