Institutional Ethnography in Feminist Organizational Research: A
Session with Dorothy E. Smith
Sponsor(s): (GDO, CMS, RM)
Scheduled: Saturday, Aug 7 2010 4:45PM - 7:45PM at Le Centre Sheraton
in Salon 3 Montreal Academy of Management Meetings
This interactive PDW will allow organization studies and management
scholars to learn from and engage in discussion with Dr. Dorothy E.
Smith, a prominent feminist sociologist whose work is the basis for
institutional ethnography (IE). IE is a feminist sociology and
methodology that makes visible the everyday work of women and others
that is typically hidden by institutional processes and language. It
has been used in fields such as health care, education, public
planning, social work and organization studies, and we are confident
there is even more potential for its use in our field. After an
introduction from feminist organizational scholars Marta Calás and
Linda Smircich, and a lecture and discussion period led by Dorothy
Smith, the larger group will break into small groups based on common
research interests. These groups will have the task of brainstorming
new ideas regarding how institutional ethnography can be used further
in management and organizational studies and how we can connect with
those doing IE in other fields. Lively discussion, new connections and
ground-breaking ideas are expected!
