    Dear Colleagues:

As management scholars and practitioners, we often espouse the relevance and importance of individual and corporate social responsibility. We encourage our students to engage in volunteerism and/or service learning projects to support a particular philanthropic cause, non-profit organization, small business, or corporation. Further, we attempt to instill a sense of individual social responsibility with the hopes of developing more holistic, contributing corporate citizens that focus on multiple bottom lines. However, how often do we challenge ourselves and our colleagues to actually "roll up our sleeves and get our hands dirty" in such activities?

Montreal provides an opportunity for us to dare to show that we care by engaging in community volunteerism within our host city. In particular, we have chosen the Tyndale St-Georges Community Centre as the site for us to venture outside our academic and/or conference comfort zones and to demonstrate the corporate social responsibility that we research and teach. The Centre leadership indicated that their greatest need would be for us to assist with physical enhancements of its facilities to help them prepare to service the community in the upcoming academic year. While we realize that such "hands on" volunteerism may take some prospective volunteers outside of their comfort zones, we believe that such activities would meet the critical needs of the Centre and at the same time, allow us to contribute to and support an organization that is committed to enhancing the lives of their diverse patron base.

This division service project (Session #14504: "Daring to Show We Care: 'Rolling up our sleeves and getting our hands dirty'") is open to all. For planning purposes, please pre-register online at: https://secure.aomonline.org/PDWReg. Participants will meet in the Sheraton Joyce room at 9 am for introductions and instructions, and then will proceed over to the Community Centre. If you have any question, please feel free to contact me or Douglas Johnson (cjohnson@ggc.edu). We look forward to seeing you on the 4th!
