  • 1.  Seeking advice about a good masters text on diversity

    Hi colleagues,

I'm going to be teaching my first diversity course, aimed at masters-level students, and am trying to decide whether to use a text or a collection or articles. If you have any advice for me as I put together my syllabus over the next two weeks, I would really love to hear it. In particular:

    ·         Have you found a text that you like (preferably one with good cases or exercises)?

    ·         Can you recommend any articles that have really "grabbed" your students?

    ·         Do you have any recommendations for videos or exercises that work well?

o   I recently found this video clip which I plan to use during my lecture on stereotypes. It's part of the TED series. You might want to check it out: http://www.youtube.com/user/tedtalksdirector?blend=1&ob=4#p/search/1/D9Ihs241zeg

o   I also just ordered a few DVDs from ABC Nightline news. After I watch them, I'll report back if any of them seem appropriate for a diversity class.

    ·         Or if it's easier, do you have a syllabus that you'd be willing to share with me?

Thanks very much for your input.

    Lisa

I've used Myrtle Bell's Book "Diversity in Organizations" for the past 2 years. It is great for base knowledge about the most salient dimensions of diversity in the workplace.

You will need to design your pedagogy around it (i.e., exercises, etc.). The Gardenswartz and Rowe book is great for that- it's more a practitioner guide...but without the knowledge base. I also love Peggy McIntosh's knapsack of privilege, Loden and Rosener, and Thomas and Ely articles.

If you need specific cites, let me know.

    Have fun!

    Hi Lisa,

I use two books for my MBA diversity course, both self-authored and published by Sage Publications: The fourth edition of Women and Men in Management, which focuses on issues of sex and gender, was just published. The third edition of Managing a Diverse Workforce, a book of classroom activities on a wide range of diversity topics, will be published in December. I use supplementary articles to cover diversity topics other than those pertaining to sex and gender, as shown on the syllabus.

As listserv messages are not allowed to have attachments, I am sending you in a separate message (1) my MBA syllabus for Spring 2010 and (2) my expected syllabus for Spring 2011 using the new edition of each book. The Spring 2011 syllabus was prepared for Sage to post on the web pages for the two books.  Anyone else who would like the two syllabi should write to me directly.

Good luck with your course, whatever you use for materials.

    Best wishes,

    Gary

    Hi Lisa
I teach 'Gender and Diversity in Organisations to research Masters (not MBA) and have done for a number of years. I will send you my curriculum and readings for 2010 and it obviously as a non-US focus but may be of interest for that reason.
    best wishes
