"Globalized Work and Economy in San Antonio" (off-site tour)
Saturday the 13th, 2-5pm, session # 313
Meet in lobby of Marriott Rivercenter no later than 1:45pm
Cost: $35
This is an off-site session involving a short bus trip to visit people and
places involved in several local immigrant organizing efforts. We will be
visiting the Southwest Workers Union (http://www.swunion.org/ ), 'an
organization of low-income workers and families, community residents, and
youth, united in one organizational struggle for worker rights,
environmental justice and community empowerment. Based in San Antonio,
Texas, SWU empowers and organizes its 2,500 members through education,
leadership development, and direct action. The aim is to build
multi-generational grassroots power to create sustainable systemic change
for social, economic, and environmental justice and to build the movement
for dignity and justice.' We will visit SWU offices to speak with
representatives of their staff and membership then travel to the
neighborhood around Kelly Air Force Base to meet members of an associated
community group, the Committee for Environmental Justice Action, is doing
organizing work to combat toxic pollution associated with military operations.
Finally, we will visit San Anto Cultural Arts group in the
West Side neighborhood (http://www.sananto.org/).
The cost of the excursion (to cover bus transportation and contribution to
participating organizations) is $35. Because we have a limited number of
seats on the bus, PRE-REGISTRATION (contact me, Sarah Stookey,
stookeysab@ccsu.edu) IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO RESERVE A SPACE. However,
WALK-INS MAY ALSO BE ACCOMMODATED. ALL PARTICIPANTS (registered or not)
SHOULD MEET IN THE LOBBY OF THE MARRIOTT RIVERCENTER NO LATER THAN 1:45PM.
