Common Classroom Culture: Application of the Diversity Icebreaker in
    Multicultural Student Groups Diversity Icebreaker

    Program Session #: 130 | Submission: 10761 | Sponsor(s): (MED, IM, GDO)

    Salon D

    Sciences; Germany

This PDW will provide participants with information on how to create a
common classroom culture and why this is important through a classic
Diversity Icebreaker seminar. They will be introduced to the concepts of
Red, Blue and Green working styles and the way in which awareness of the
diversity of these styles can be used to promote better interaction and
collective learning. Furthermore, we will explore how these categories of
Diversity Icebreaker can be combined with information about cultural based
learning beliefs, focusing on the differences between East and West.
During the workshop, cross-cultural research from a Western (German) and
East-Asian (Chinese) context will be presented to illustrate that the
relative emphasis that is placed on various elements of the learning
process, and the meaning that learning has as a concept, differs between
these cultures. These differences have a profound impact on the classroom
environment. We suggest that an understanding of diversity both on the
cross-cultural and within-cultural levels will allow for the creation of a
common classroom culture. Through the application of the Diversity
Icebreaker seminar and questionnaire, we believe that teachers will be
able to more effectively create a solid basis of understanding and
communication that will help successfully manage diversity and promote
    learning in the classroom.

We suggest to expand the theoretical dimensions in Diversity Icebreaker to
    include learning styles.
