Program Theme: Implications of Technology for Today’s Managers: Opportunities and Challenges
Nearly everywhere we look technology is changing how we live, work, and interact with others. The pervasive changes are particularly apparent in today’s business organizations, where managers and their employees are faced with a new and often bewildering array of added complexities in how to best conduct their work for maximum effectiveness and efficiency. From deciding where and when to work, to coping with the blurring of boundaries between work and family brought about by mobile phones and remote access to databases and the Internet, organizations and their members are facing difficult decisions. Should individual work, teams, and organizations be designed differently to accommodate the changed way in which employees communicate and interact, and if so what should this look like? If employees work virtually from alternate locations, what new managerial models and techniques are required? How do managers need to lead, motivate, and guide differently in order to accommodate the changed landscape and the new problems and possibilities brought about by advancing technologies? Moreover, although it is now possible to be on-call “24/7”, what are the reasonable limits that should be demanded of employees? We encourage papers and symposia to address these and other implications of technology for today’s organizations, their managers and employees. We particularly invite papers and symposia that propose or discuss new theoretical or conceptual models that might provide greater insights into the vexing complexities and paradoxes offered by the new technology-induced ways managers must manage and employees must work.

Dear GDO faculty, doctoral students, and practitioners:

Eastern Academy of Management (EAM) conference

May 8-11, 2013 in Baltimore, MD

    Details: https://eamconference.org/

Program Theme: Creativity and Innovation: Designs for the Future

This year's conference theme, "Creativity and Innovation: Designs for the Future" focuses on the need for organizations to respond in new and different ways to dynamic market forces. In the midst of rapidly changing technology and a culture that craves exciting products and services, organizations are compelled to innovate to remain competitive. The success of companies like Google, Apple and Facebook demonstrates the value of paradigm-breaking innovation. It is clear that leaders need to create conditions that support organizational innovation and individual creativity. In what ways can organizations create the structure, culture and rewards that nurture a flow of new and revolutionary ideas? Are there best practices among highly innovative firms that can be adapted to promote greater creativity in different types of organizations? How can managers and educators utilize insights from the growing body of research on creativity to promote greater levels of innovation? Overall, how can firms develop strategies that allow them to compete in this increasingly innovative world? We welcome submissions that address the conference theme or traditional management topics.

This year also marks an amazing milestone for EAM. We will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the EAM at our meeting in Baltimore. We will feature special sessions and events to commemorate 50 years of scholarship and collegiality. This year's meeting promises to be an exciting and engaging event!
