Program Theme: Implications of Technology for Today’s Managers: Opportunities and Challenges
Nearly everywhere we look technology is changing how we live, work, and interact with others. The pervasive changes are particularly apparent in today’s business organizations, where managers and their employees are faced with a new and often bewildering array of added complexities in how to best conduct their work for maximum effectiveness and efficiency. From deciding where and when to work, to coping with the blurring of boundaries between work and family brought about by mobile phones and remote access to databases and the Internet, organizations and their members are facing difficult decisions. Should individual work, teams, and organizations be designed differently to accommodate the changed way in which employees communicate and interact, and if so what should this look like? If employees work virtually from alternate locations, what new managerial models and techniques are required? How do managers need to lead, motivate, and guide differently in order to accommodate the changed landscape and the new problems and possibilities brought about by advancing technologies? Moreover, although it is now possible to be on-call “24/7”, what are the reasonable limits that should be demanded of employees? We encourage papers and symposia to address these and other implications of technology for today’s organizations, their managers and employees. We particularly invite papers and symposia that propose or discuss new theoretical or conceptual models that might provide greater insights into the vexing complexities and paradoxes offered by the new technology-induced ways managers must manage and employees must work.
