    Good afternoon Community,

Newark's own and my nephew Michael B. Jordan will acting in the movie "RED TAILS".  For those of you who are unsure as to what the movie is about, it is a story of the WWII Tuskegee Airmen at the very least.  The big production and distributions houses think a movie about African American History won't make any money.  We (African American community) are classified and noted for not supporting our own.  Please read on.

The cast includes: Terrance Howard, Cuba Gooding, Jr., and Bryan Cranston. It also features Nate Parker ( The Great Debaters); David Oyelowo; Tristan Wilds (90210); Aml Ameen (Harry's Law), Malcolm Davies; Cliff Smith (aka Method Man); and Michael B. Jordan (Friday Night Lights and Parenthood).

This is a George Lucas project.  George Lucas (mastermind of Star Wars and countless other films) wanted to do a project on the Tuskegee Airmen... let that statement sink in for a bit!  This was filmed 3 years ago!!! Yes, filmed 3 years ago!!! Why are we just now hearing about it?  Why haven't there been any commercials until now?  It  happens when big production/distribution houses choose not to back a movie because they believe it will not make them enough money.  Lets please prove them wrong.

Not only are African Americans the face of this movie, there are some hard hitting brothers behind the scenes as well.  It was directed by Anthony Hemingway (The Wire, CSI, Treme and Changing Lanes), scripted by John Ridley (Undercover Brother and Three Kings)  and Aaron McGruder (The Boondocks). Terrance Blanchard who scored the film wrote: "The music is definitely heroic. We actually used a 70-piece orchestra with a 40-piece choir. Then, underneath all of that, I have a lot of African and ethnic percussion grooves that I created here at my home studio."

I'm urging  and asking all of you to see this movie, and tell others about it as well.  Anything we can do to ensure large numbers of viewers in the first few days of release (scheduled for Jan. 20th)  will make a statement to the production and distribution companies that we are interested in seeing this film, and, that they made a miscalculation.

If each of you tell as many people about this as you can, and attempt to take 4 or 5 people with you to see the film, that will be like a geometric progression, and could potentially push the numbers off the chart.

As we watch an action packed history-based film we are also demonstrating to the living Airmen, and to their families, our respect and regard.

Additionally, we are correctly demonstrating to the public about US as a people and our contributions to this vast land.  Please click on the link for more information.

I take it that you're going this weekend, Jaye. I hope all our GDO colleagues follow your example.  Together, we can influence Hollywood's bias against African American films of substance and show that they can make money. I know I'm sick and tired of the image of African Americans and other black people that is shown in many movies and TV shows that have black characters. Going this weekend is important because the first weekend box office record is one of the critical measures by which films are judged.

Well said, dt! Planning on attending with the family on Saturday. In fact, we're making it a family outing with my alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi and taking our mentoring group and the other Black Greek fraternities and sororities in the area along with us. I just learned last year that one of my cousins was a Tuskegee Airman and my 2 kids met him (and saw the medal he received from President Obama) so we're really looking forward to it and then going to visit him to discuss over Spring Break!

All, please support the movie this weekend or as soon as practical. Thanks!

    Regards,

    Douglas

Thanks very much for the heads up on this, dt! This is a perfect activity to do this weekend with my stepchildren (13 and 18).  I can't wait -- it's been a long time since I have been to a good film!

    Best,
    Mary

I take it that you're going this weekend, Jaye. I hope all our GDO colleagues follow your example.  Together, we can influence Hollywood's bias against African American films of substance and show that they can make money. I know I'm sick and tired of the image of African Americans and other black people that is shown in many movies and TV shows that have black characters. Going this weekend is important because the first weekend box office record is one of the critical measures by which films are judged.

    Best regards,
