In this innovative and creative session, you will learn and practice a storytelling technique that has been the foundation of American Indian education for centuries. Native American storytelling pedagogy can be applied to business contexts as a way of invoking inductive, reflective, critical thinking in both educators and students. The purpose of this session are a story analysis and writing workshop to create a deeper appreciation of Native American pedagogy and provide a mechanism for greater cultural understanding while respecting differences in cultural worldviews. AOM will be stronger and more inclusive through: 1) allowing marginalized voices to be heard and valued, 2) broadening your exposure to and understanding of appropriate uses of this diverse perspective, and 3) incorporating into our conferences and classrooms this knowledge. American Indian stories are not time bound, events occurring in these stories are as applicable to our lives today as they were when shared generations ago. Lessons are serendipitous, reflective and inductive. Using a contemporary story written by the organizers, you will be engaged in interpreting the story to discover a sense of how lessons are realized through this Native process. Small groups will creatively devise and write a timeless story using the elements of Native American storytelling around one of several themes. You will take away our story, your own stories, as well as methods for creating stories as a pedagogical approach.
