    Breaking into the Upper Echelons:

How Women Get There, Succeed, and Pave the Way for Others

Monday, Aug 4 2014 8:00AM - 9:30AM at Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown Hotel in Independence B

Women are advancing into the upper echelons in organizations at a growing rate. While the barriers to women's advancement at the highest levels in organizations have long been the mainstay of organizational scholarship, the recent upward trends in the representation of women in the TMT call for a more nuanced understanding of factors that predict the ascendance and success of women in leadership roles. More research effort is required to understand not just the barriers to advancement, but also the factors that contribute to the success of women who make it to the upper echelons of large corporations: in terms of how they get there, what they do while they're there, and how their being at the top paves the way for the successful ascent of future women. Therefore, the proposed symposium unites scholars from varied research traditions including strategy, gender and diversity, and organizational sociology, with the aim at reframing the dialogue on gender diversity in the upper echelons by shedding light on women's transition into CEO roles, their success in the executive roles, and the impact of women's leadership on the mentoring and development of future female/minority leaders. More specifically, the set of papers presented in this symposium offer a multi-stage (pre-entry/post-entry) and multi- stakeholder perspective on the phenomenon of gender diversity in the upper echelons and provide a unique vantage point through which we can look beyond the barriers to women's advancement highlighted by past research and instead shed light on what happens before, during, and after the succession of women top executives. Thus, the presentations in this symposium provide a unique '360° view of the top' for female executives that helps answer fundamental questions about the process through which women actually get to the upper echelons, what they do and how they perform when they reach the top, and finally, what implications this has for future generations of female/minority executives?
