The Gonzaga Institute for Hate Studies Publishes Special Volume on November 2, 2012
SPOKANE, WA: The Gonzaga University Institute for Hate Studies announces the publication of Volume 10 of its annual Journal of Hate Studies. "Hate and Political Discourse" is the theme for this special volume, which marks the Journal's 10th anniversary.
This cross-disciplinary collection of eight peer-review articles and two books reviews covers such wide-ranging topics as the definitions and causes of hate, how hate operates in specific historical and cultural contexts, and efforts to address hate through law enforcement, legislation, literature, and education. The authors address the individual psychology of group hatred, the ideological underpinnings and cultural messages of political hate propaganda, nationalist and religious blood libels across time and cultures, popular hate-based political and social organizing in the 20th-century United States and 21st-century United Kingdom, comparative analysis of national hate crimes legislation, and uses of young adult fiction to educate against hate.
Authors published in this volume include Stanford Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences Fellow Marla Stone (History, Occidental College); experts on British extremist groups Jon Garland and James Treadwell (Criminology, University of Leicester); and Westboro Baptist Church expert Rebecca Barrett-Fox (Sociology, Hesston College); Damon T. Berry (Comparative Studies, The Ohio State University); Rachel Dean-Ruzicka (Literature, Media, and Communication, Georgia Institute of Technology); Daniel Kato (Political Science, Kalamazoo College); Robert Lanning (Sociology and Anthropology, Mount Saint Vincent University); Willa Michener (Center for International Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology); and Jennifer Schweppe (University of Limerick School of Law).
On September 27, the authors gathered at the American University Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C., for a one-day special symposium on "Hate and Political Discourse" to mark the 10th anniversary of the Journal of Hate Studies and kick off the 15th anniversary year for the Institute for Hate Studies. The Journal's managing editor, Institute for Hate Studies Director John Shuford, co-organized the symposium with Robert L. Tsai, the guest editor for Volume 10 and a noted constitutional law expert at the Washington College of Law.
Mari Matsuda, the widely influential legal scholar at the William S. Richardson School of Law, University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, delivered the symposium's keynote address. An article based on Matsuda's keynote remarks, titled "Is Peacemaking Unpatriotic?: On Violence and Ideology," will appear in a future volume of the Journal of Hate Studies.
