  • 1.  help with class on transgender issues in the workplace

    Posted 11-15-2012 16:12

    Colleagues-

I'm running a class on transgender issues as part of my undergraduate "managing diversity at work" class.  I'm looking for resources to prepare a short intro lecture (definitions, workplace issues, etc.) and also looking for any activities/exercises anyone is willing to share on the topic.  I am aware of the Steve/Stephanie HBR case; I'm looking for other things.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

    HI Tammy,

The Human Rights Campaign and Transgender Workplace Diversity Network can both provide some good material/resources.

    Hi Tammy,

I realized that my notes were all over the place, so I organized them a bit and added recent links I found.  Good background prep for a student group presentation on Monday and for my winter term... Thanks!! :-)   I am going to try and attach files to this post (assuming the listserv will allow me) -

-- the Word file includes notes - ideas for lecture content, clips, short readings for undergraduate students, URLs to definitions pages, ...

-- the Excel file includes some bare-bones slides.  I often have students do mini-presentations in the course, and they take the lead on having content slides.

I have not done any specific activities on the topic.  I often use YouTube or other clips as a trigger for conversation - there are several in the attached file.  I have used an exercise based on Riddle's Homophobia Scale as a general exercise on the power of language - I actually use it when talking about disability not GLB, could work here too.  I can send you my materials if you'd like.

    Cheers,
    Ron

I love that a question re: transgender teaching resources elicited such a response - rock on, GDO! There is a case in the CASE Journal, 2010, Called "Not a pronoun: A transgender's professional journey" that highlights a transgender's experience in the counseling field.

    Again, hooray for GDO!
