Happy New Year GDO members!!!
As the submission deadline for the 2013 AOM conference approaches, I wanted to remind you to please consider submitting a PDW proposal for the conference. The pre-conference workshops are a vibrant part of the conference, thanks to the great submissions that we receive from our members. Below you can see the original call for PDW proposals that went out in the fall. In addition the ideas presented in the proposal, I wanted to also encourage you to consider submitting proposals for PDWs related to the following topics. If you are already planning a PDW related to one of these ideas, or are interested in doing so, please feel free to contact me so that we can discuss ideas/details. Of course, you are welcome to contact me about other PDW ideas as well.
1) Publishing panel for international scholars: This is in response to requests from international members across the academy for developmental opportunities that may help them to publish more in top U.S. journals.
2) Research funding – how and why win grants, particularly related to diversity research
3) Life after tenure – what are the different opportunities, activities, responsibilities that are presented to scholars after tenure, and what are (a) strategies for approaching these effectively; and (b) the career outcomes associated with choosing various opportunities?
4) Teaching diversity: sharing ideas about cases, exercises, assignments, teaching approaches for teaching diversity to undergraduates, masters students, and/or executive audiences.
5) Research related to the aging workforce – topics, strategies, methods. Given the ever-increasing need for research on aging, it might be useful to members if they can meet with other scholars doing aging research to discuss their experiences, strategies, methods, etc.
We look forward to receiving your proposals!!

2013 GDO Division Professional Development Workshops: Call for Proposals
The Gender and Diversity in Organizations (GDO) Division invites proposals for the pre-conference professional development workshops (PDW) to be held at the 2013 Academy of Management meeting in Orlando, Florida, USA.. PDW sessions will be held between 8:00 a.m. Friday, August 9th, and 8:00 p.m., Saturday, August 10th.
The mission of the GDO Division is to generate and disseminate knowledge about gender and diversity within and outside of organizations, to embrace diverse perspectives in organizational research and education, and to support social justice through the inclusion of marginalized voices in members' research and practice.
We encourage submission of PDWs designed to develop and enhance our members' professional and personal skills – particularly those related to GDO's mission. PDWs which enhance our members' understanding and appreciation of the variety of approaches and subjects of study adopted by our international membership are highly desirable. Examples include workshops that reflect the diversity of academic careers; focus on the relationship between national cultural, historical, and regulatory contexts and salient dimensions of difference; involve international panels on topics of interest to GDO; and/or stimulate debate about a topic over which people hold diverse views. In addition, we are keen on receiving proposals for developmental workshops such as research incubators, publishing workshops, and fora for forging meaningful international collaborations. We especially invite proposals that relate to the theme for the 2013 meeting, "Capitalism in Question." Examples of questions that might relate to the conference theme include: What is the relationship between different forms of capitalism and organizations' adoption of, and commitment to, effective diversity strategies? Are more profit-driven approaches to diversity management capable of driving the widespread changes necessary for eliminating discrimination and bias within organizations? We urge you to read more about the 2013 conference theme at http://annualmeeting.aomonline.org/2013/ to aid in the development of your PDW proposals.
PDW sessions can take any form including tutorials, panels, roundtable discussions, case studies, debates, and invited speakers. In addition, sessions may include practitioners, colleagues from other disciplines, and other types of organizations including corporations, public sector entities, and non-profits. PDWs provide an opportunity to experiment with new approaches that do not fit within the confines of the regular program, so submitters are encouraged to be innovative in workshop design. Interactive workshops will be particularly welcomed. Cross-divisional proposals, which involve two or more divisions and/or interest groups, are also strongly desired and encouraged.
PDW submissions should be made through the Academy's website,
http://annualmeeting.aomonline.org/2013/. The submission system will open on November 6, 2012, and the deadline for submissions is January 15, 2013, at 5pm EST. The AOM Program "Rule of Three" applies to the 2013 PDW Program-no one may submit or be associated with more than three PDW submissions or appear in more than three PDW sessions during the PDW program.
You are welcome to discuss potential PDWs with Lisa Nishii at lhn5@cornell.edu before submitting your proposal. Please note, though, that the deadline for submitters to contact the PDW Chair for general inquiries and information discussion about ideas for PDW sessions is December 10, 2012.
