Dear Gwendolyn and Dianna,

We hope you are well. We write to ask whether you might circulate to members of the GDO Division details of a plenary session we in the CMS Division have organized for Monday 12 August at 3.00pm (details below)?

Our featured speaker is Professor Raewyn Connell a noted sociologist who has researched and written extensively on gender and sexual politics since the 1970s. We think her address would be of interest and relevance to many of your division members and would appreciate if you could include the attached details in any correspondence you circulate to the GDO Division prior to the Academy meeting.

Our thanks and very best wishes

    Gavin Jack and Jan Schapper

    CMS Plenary Session:

Featured Speaker: Professor Raewyn Connell on

Gender and Sexual Politics of Global Capitalism.

The CMS Plenary Session will feature an address by Professor Raewyn Connell, University Chair, and pre-eminent sociologist from the University of Sydney. In keeping with her research and the conference theme, Professor Connell will address the topic of the gender and sexual politics of global capitalism.

Among her other academic accomplishments, Professor Connell has developed a sociology of intellectuals in the context of neoliberal globalization. Her book Southern Theory (2007) critiques the northern bias of mainstream social science, and surveys social theories that arise in the global periphery. Her studies of the social construction of masculinity are also well-known. She was one of the founders of this research field and her book Masculinities (1995, 2005) is the most-cited in the field.

Raewyn's style of scholarship tries to combine empirical research, structural theory, social critique, and relevance to practice. Much of her research uses biographical (life-history) interviewing, but she has also published survey research, historical research, institutional analysis, and theory. Her most recent book, combining work from several research projects, is Confronting Equality (2011). For further background on Raewyn Connell see www.raewynconnell.net
