Towards new horizons – considerations for responsible management education conference

Te Kārohirohi is taken from a blessing given by Rangawhenua to King Tāwhiao (the second Māori King) as he journeyed to England in the late 1800s.

Within the blessing, Te Kārohirohi speaks of the shimmering light that dances across the ocean's waves to symbolise a good day. It captures the thought that the shimmering light is a guide for travellers as they move towards new horizons and new thinking. The focus is on the future and towards development.

Call to Conference

The mission of the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) initiative is to inspire and champion responsible management education, research and thought leadership globally.

The PRME are inspired by internationally accepted values such as the principles of the United Nations Global Compact. They seek to establish a process of continuous improvement among institutions of management education in order to develop a new generation of business leaders capable of managing the complex challenges faced by business and society in the 21st century.

In the current academic environment, corporate responsibility and sustainability have entered but not yet become embedded in the mainstream of business-related education. The PRME are therefore a timely global call for business schools and universities worldwide to gradually adapt their curricula, research, teaching methodologies and institutional strategies to the new business challenges and opportunities.

In consideration of this environment, we will attempt to integrate diverse cultural perspectives and disciplinary fields to discuss four specific but necessarily inter-related themes for this conference. The four themes are: 

• Indigenous Business and Responsible Management: Māori Perspectives
• Environmental responsiveness
• Social equity in stability
• Ethical practices

Call for Papers for presentation

The regional meeting of the PRME and the special orientation of this meeting to the strengthening voice of indigenous people has provided a welcome opportunity for the Waikato-Tainui College for Research and Development and the Waikato Management School to come together to host a conference that brings together the values intrinsic to Māori as they tackle issues of development in which social, environmental, spiritual, and economic aspirations are intricately entwined; and the aspirations of Waikato Management School's deepening expressions of sustainable development in keeping with its expressed commitment to a strong relationship with Māori – and with the Tainui people in particular.

We invite contributions from researchers, educators, and teachers who have an interest in enhancing the contribution of management education in our four interrelated themes.

We welcome a variety of ways to be considered for inclusion on the programme or to have your work made visible. We welcome proposals for presentation from diverse disciplines and from specialists and generalists alike.

We call for abstracts no longer than 500 words that provide an insight into your work and the style of presentation that you would like to make by September 13, 2013.

These submissions will be reviewed and responded to by October 1, 2013. Accepted submissions will be integrated into a lively and diverse agenda in close collaboration with the conference team. Early bird registrations will be open for the month of September.

Qualifying paper submissions will also be eligible for submission to a special issue of The Journal of Corporate Citizenship (Greenleaf Publishing), edited by Maria Humphries, Waikato Management School.
