We are struggling with assignment of thesis advisors and determining how to calculate faculty course loads. At the moment we are assigning each faculty 10-12 advisees as primary advisor. Students begin their thesis in the 2nd of their 4 semester program. The second semester is developing their problem statement and obtaining IRB approval. Majority of the work begins in the 3rd semester and 4th semester. Faculty also serve as secondary thesis advisors in addition to serving as primary advisors.

I would like any advice/feedback on what are the current practices at your institutions.

Thank you in advance for assisting me with this.
