In recent years, heightened scholarly attention has been paid to workplace mistreatment. Within this domain, incivility has especially grabbed researchers' attention. Workplace incivility is defined as ambiguous, rude behaviors that violate norms of respect (Andersson & Pearson, 1999) and includes behaviors such as hostile looks, disrespectful remarks, or ignoring a colleague. In the last decade, hundreds of academic articles have been published on workplace incivility. This surge of interest reflects a pervasive phenomenon in need of greater consideration and awareness.

This session will foster conversations that advance workplace incivility scholarship, addressing promising new research topics such as incivility's underlying mechanisms and its multi-faceted nature (i.e., target, perpetrator, and witness perspectives). An issue we will discuss that may be of particular interest to GDO members is incivility as it is disproportionately targeted at women and minority groups (i.e., selective incivility). We will also discuss topics such as mediators and moderators of incivility's relationship with outcomes, the possible "bright side" of incivility, the role of civility policies to combat incivility, as well as key methodologies for conducting future research.

The 2.5 hour workshop will include a panel discussion featuring experts in incivility research as well as roundtable discussions of participants' current research projects. We ask that participants email the facilitators a two-page summary of a research project they would like to discuss by July 10, 2015. In this summary, please include 2-3 questions that you find most pressing as you pursue research on incivility. Roundtable discussions will be formed based on project topics and pressing questions. Participants will be able to discuss their current projects with fellow scholars and field experts to receive feedback and strategies for publication.

To register, please email the following information to both Shanna Daniels (srdaniels@fsu.edu) and Lisa Marchiondo (lisa.marchiondo@wayne.edu) with the subject line "Incivility Research Incubator":

    • Research interests
    • Current or proposed research project (brief background, hypotheses)
    • Current or proposed methodology (if available)
    • If available, preliminary results
    • Pressing questions you have as you pursue the proposed research project
    • Questions and discussion points you would like the expert researchers to address in a panel discussion

Once we receive and approve your proposal, we will send you the registration code, which you can use to officially register at the AOM PDW website. This session has limited availability, so registration will occur on a first-come first-served basis.

We look forward to seeing you there!
