Program Session: 22 | Submission: 17213 | Sponsor(s): (GDO, MC)
Scheduled: Friday, Aug 5 2016 8:00AM - 10:00AM at Sheraton Park Hotel in Park D
In today's complex, global, and interconnected workplace, achieving organizational goals requires collaboration across boundaries. Success demands that individuals span demographic, geographic, and functional boundaries to share information, resources, and best practices (Ernst & Chrobot-Mason, 2010). Despite this clear need for collaboration and information sharing, many employees are unaware of how homogeneous and thus ineffective their networks are. In this PDW, we provide participants with the opportunity to assess the diversity, depth, and openness of their current network and then identify strategies to improve and enhance their network. The workshop will consist of three parts based on a framework developed by Cullen-Lester, Woehler, and Willburn (2016): 1) Understanding Networks, 2) Diagnosing your Network, and 3) Developing Strategies to Improve your Network. We will provide an overview of the emerging field of organizational network analysis with a focus on the benefits of having an open and diverse network for performance and creativity. We will present common network traps and help participants identify ways to create more diversity in their networks.
