Dear colleagues,
As you know, the number of refugees from Syria and Afghanistan arriving in Europe has significantly increased since summer 2015. One of the biggest challenges is their integration in the labor markets of the host countries. While there is a growing literature on careers of skilled migrants, the specific situation of refugees and challenges they face remains underexplored.
Therefore we plan to conduct a presenter symposium at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management 2017 in Atlanta, aiming to provide an overview of studies showing how refugees attempt to enter the labor market and to pursue their careers in host countries. We strive for a variety of host countries represented and theoretical/methodological approaches employed by the individual papers contributing to the symposium.
Research foci may refer to, but are not restricted to
(1) what kinds of barriers refugees face in their attempts to enter the labor market and how they react to these barriers,
(2) how refugees seek to increase their career capital in the host country,
(3) what role public agencies, NGOs and organizations play in refugees' labor market integration, etc.
Since we already have contributions from Austria, the Netherlands and Greece we particularly aim to include studies from other regions (be it in Europe or other parts of the world facing the challenge of refugees labor market integration).
There is still room for 1-2 presentations in our symposium, so if you are interested to join us, please send a rough description of the main idea of your paper by December 20 to markus.latzke@wu.ac.at
We will reply by December 22, asking contributors to send their 5 page summaries by December 30 so that we will have sufficient time left to write the overall symposium abstract and outline.
We are very much looking forward to receiving your ideas and contributions!
Thank you and best regards,
