  • 1.  A timely request from CMS

    Dear GDO members,

I am writing to forward a request from a good friend of GDO, Professor Raza Mir.  His request comes at a time when members of the GDO Executive Committee are considering how the division should respond in an ongoing way to President Trump's assaults on the values of GDO and of people of goodwill the world over.  I urge you to do as he asks, contacting AoM leadership on the important issue of this exclusionary Executive Order.

In addition, please use the GDO listserv to share your thoughts on objectives and strategies for how we, as a international group of diversity educators and researchers, can fight this scourge.

Thank you for your help in this.

    Sincerely,

    Doug Creed, Chair, GDO

    Dear Fellow Academics,

It has now been three days since Donald Trump promulgated a shameful and exclusionary, not to mention racist Executive Order restricting travel to the US. The order is arbitrary, illegal, and is being protested, and it is time we did our bit as well.

The AOM has an international membership, and is planning to hold its annual meetings in Atlanta this August.

I am requesting all of you who are members of the AOM to write to the leadership asking that the Academy take a firm stand against this. It is the least that an organization that commits itself to internationalism can do. We need to put some pressure on the AOM leadership to act quickly. The American Association of Universities, and several universities in the US have already condemned this action, and it is quite reasonable for us to expect something similar from the AOM.

The President of the AOM is Anita McGahan: amcgahan@rotman.utoronto.ca. The program Chair is Carol Kulik:

    Carol.Kulik@unisa.edu.au.

I tried hard to find aom.org email addresses for them, but was unable to do so.
    *
    * Please forward as appropriate to all management academics/lists. And please do take the time to write, for we need a critical mass.

    Thanks,

    Raza Mir

    Dear Doug:

Thanks for passing on Raza Mir's message.  I encourage all GDO members to contact the AOM leadership.

There are no aom.org addresses for AOM board members.  Board members use their own e-mail address as indicated on the membership website.  But among the paid staff, Nancy Urbanowitz, the Executive Director, is the individual that you would want to contact, as well as the individual responsible for meetings, Taryn Fiore (Director of Meetings and Conferences).  You might also contact the individual responsible for membership, Julia Vesei (Member Services Coordinator).  Telephone numbers (but not e-mail addresses) are listed on the AOM website under "About AOM" and then "Contact Us."

The AOM has been unwilling to take a political stand (problems with tax exempt status AND diversity of political opinions among the membership), but in this case they are dealing with a pragmatic problem.  So I think if we approach the issue as a pragmatic problem with respect to conference attendance, not an ethical or political issue, we will get a much better response.

In case you're wondering, I served on the Board for a full three year term recently.  If you want a current Board member who is also a member of GDO, Alison Konrad is on the Board.

    Happy contacting!

    Best regards,
    Gayle

     Dear Ana,

Thank you so much for your thoughtful response.

First, on the practical issue, I believe your post did go to the listserv.  In the morning I will nonetheless confirm that and if not I will send your message to the  Listserv.

Second,  I agree that this is not merely an attendance problem and it would be wrong to reduce it to that.   I believe that Gayle was very much aware of that broader concern as she composed her thoughtful advice and tried to offer a tactical approach. I appreciate her effort to help us gain some traction with the broader Academy.  We will need insights like that given that the AOM  has  not as a rule engage in issues that it considered political.

Third, I could not agree more that we as a body need to speak from our personal consciences  while also trying to act in concert.

I probably should not be trying to write at this late hour, but I wanted to thank you  and Gayle and to encourage all members of GDO  to  showing this conversation.

    In gratitude,

    Doug Creed

    Dear Doug,

I don't know if I have an ability to post to the GDO list serve. If not, I would appreciate it if you would pass on this message for me.

Thanks to each of you for raising the need to respond as a Division, and for considering how best to address this US Executive decree. I can appreciate the concern raised about taking political action given the Academy's tax-exempt status. Yet, as a practitioner and educator concerned with global diversity, and as a naturalized citizen, I also wonder how the Diversity and Inclusion Division of this Academy of scholars can ignore this "multi-national and religious exclusion" and treat it merely as a conference attendance problem. We can all reach out and speak our individual consciences, but I wonder if it would be possible to think together and out loud about how to respond as the GDO division of the AOM?

    Best,

    Ana Reyes
