    Dear All

    What I have been observing in this thread (and other AOM Listserv threads) is this that people are so excited – so super excited – to do the simplest thing possible – issue a strong protest letter against USA Executive Order No. 13769.

    If we are concerned, then shouldn't we do something that would help AOM gain a better representation from the citizens of the seven countries affected because of the executive order?

    I did a simple count of members belonging to the seven countries:

    Iran = 5+1*
    Iraq = 0 (No representation)
    Libya = 0 (No representation)
    Somalia = 0 (No representation)
    Syria = 0 (No representation)
    Yemen = 0 (No representation)

    Note: All data retrieved from the following web link: http://aom.org/Member-Services/Member-Statistics.aspx   *Iran Gets mentioned twice: first as Iran, and then as Islamic republic of Iran

    Can we do something to include more people from these countries? Or are we interested in doing the usual – condemning in the strongest words.

    If condemning is what we are interested in, then we need to be a little proactive, as we should have raised the flag on January 21, 2016 (1) and February 18, 2016 (2) as well.

    Regards

    It looks like the ban is suspended for the time being by the 9th circuit appeals court. This provides some leeway to consider the implications of the ban for the AOM membership and mission. How might the AOM divisions take advantage of this temporary reprieve to address such travel restrictions or other anti-global policies that may arise in this new nationalistic era?

    Dear colleagues,

    It's not just AOM members from the 7 countries that you we should be worried about, it's also:

    1)      All the other members who will be denied entry in the US, or won't travel because they fear they might be denied entry: lately, several French and Canadian citizens were detained for several hours at customs, had their fingerprints taken, their phone searched for photos, content, contacts, emails and social media (they had to give all their passwords). See here, the cases involve Muslim citizens, and citizens who don't support Trump: http://www.cbc.ca/radio/asithappens/as-it-happens-wednesday-edition-1.3972400/canadian-woman-denied-entry-to-u-s-after-muslim-prayers-found-on-her-phone-1.3972404

    I have decided to cancel all travel to the US in the coming months including US conferences because I refuse to have my privacy invaded in such manner and if I need to support Trump to enter the US then why risk being denied entry? I know a number of colleagues who have made similar decisions. Please note that I don't mean to offend any of my American colleagues, I understand many of them do not support such human rights violations, and on the other hand the US is not the only country dealing with serious threats to democracy right now.

    2)      Beside the fact that many members of the AOM won't be able to attend, the issue is much larger and hinges on the values that we, as educated citizens, want and/or have a moral duty to stand for. I want to thank all those who have taken a stand on this listserv. I would not want to be part of a professional association that would dissociate our work from being engaged citizens.

    Thank you for the listserv and for enabling the free exchange of ideas,

    Ariane Ollier-Malaterre

    Dear Ariane

    Thank you for bringing up those substantive issues.  That reminds me of the question: how can we compensate for the absence of members like you at AOM? For example, Thanks to technology, can we make an appeal to AOM about allowing such members who can not/ do not want to come to the U.S. to participate through video conferencing or such means?

    I think we know the problems.  I hope we come out with solutions as well.
