BACKGROUND: Dr. Mitchell received his undergraduate degree from Duke University in 1964, and a Masters and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1969 in organizational psychology. He has been at the University of Washington since 1969 and became the Carlson Professor of Management in 1987, a position he still holds. He is also a Professor of Psychology at the University of Washington.

RESEARCH: Over the past 30 years Dr Mitchell has published over 100 journal articles, has had over 100 presentations at major professional meetings and has written 5 books and around 30 chapters in edited volumes. His recent research is on leadership, motivation and why people stay or leave their place of employment.

HONORS AND RECOGNITION: Dr Mitchell is a Fellow of both the Academy of Management and SIOP. In 1999 SIOP recognized him with its Scientific Contributions Award. He has won The University of Washington Business School’s Best Researcher award three times, most recently in 2005. In 2001, he won the AMR Best Paper award and the OB best paper award
