The Essential Conversations in Business and Human Rights (BHR) organizing team (Tricia Olsen, Annie Snelson-Powell, Kathleen Rehbein, Judith Schrempf-Stirling, Harry Van Buren, Michelle Westermann-Behaylo) are happy to announce our kickoff event for the fall on 17 September, 4pm (UK time)
Dr Marisa McVey of Queen's University Belfast, School of Law.
Title: 'After the Divorce: Assessing States' Obligations under the UNGPs Post-Brexit'
Marisa will be drawing on her ongoing work around Brexit and business and human rights. The UK's withdrawal from the EU has been cast as a 'leap into the unknown', a rare instance of a state exiting an integrated legal order. Yet its consequences have proven to be less like a dramatic break than an ongoing process of reorientation: ongoing and fragmented.
While Brexit's effects on UK have been extensively mapped, from devolution and constitutional change to trade and rights rollbacks, one area remains notably underexplored: corporate responsibility for human rights.
    Reading list:
McVey, M., and Montgomery A. (2024) 'NI business and human rights index: assessing the corporate implementation of the UN guiding principles on business and human rights in Northern Ireland' NI Human Rights Commission
Hackett, C., O'Kelly, C., Hopkins, S., and Patton, C. (2024) 'Covid-19 as a lens to investigate local approaches to BHR: The case of Northern Ireland' NI Legal Quarterly 75(2) 238-266.
