Position Description
The Haskayne School of Business (HSB) at the University of Calgary invites applications for a continuing appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) or Associate Professor (with tenure) in International Business Strategy. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2024, with an option to negotiate an earlier start.
The successful candidate will establish an active research program that focuses on International Business Strategy, and is aligned with the University of Calgary's, and the HSB's strategic plans. Additionally, the successful candidate will play an important role in teaching and research supervision of students in the Strategy and Global Management (SGMA) Area's undergraduate and graduate programs. Service to the Area, faculty, University, and community is also expected.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be part of a prolific and diverse research environment in the HSB, with access to state-of-the-art core infrastructure. Outstanding opportunities for collaboration are available with established research programs in international business and strategy. The position includes both teaching and research responsibilities, and will include expectations to recruit and supervise undergraduate and graduate students.
In SGMA, the successful applicant will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to international business and/or strategic management. The normal teaching load in the HSB is four courses per year, with teaching releases offered to tenure-track faculty.
The successful applicant will be expected to conduct high-quality research (evidenced by publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals), secure external research funding, and maintain an active profile in their scholarly field. Graduate program contributions include both teaching and supervising students. Research support is offered to all new hires.
Candidates at the Assistant Professor rank must have:
- A doctorate in International Business and/or Strategy, or a closely related field (such as Business Economics) by the time of hire
- An active research program in international business, including such sub-areas as, for example, international entrepreneurship, family business, and global value chains, with a high potential of future publications in high impact academic outlets such as Academic Journal Guide (AJG) 4* journals
- Evidence of past and/or potential excellence in scholarship, as demonstrated by publications and/or invited revisions in AJG 4* journals;
- A demonstrated capability in teaching, with excellent student evaluations;
- A demonstrated affinity with the practice of international business strategy, as shown by an understanding of practical issues faced by managers and a willingness to conduct managerially relevant research, capacity to contribute to HSB's engagement with the business community, and/or willingness to disseminate research to the general public and the business community;
- A demonstrated willingness to provide service, as evidenced by past engagement in committees and initiatives at a school, University, or international research and/or business community level
- Evidence of successful teamwork and a collegial approach to interacting with colleagues, students, and other stakeholders
Candidates at the Associate Professor rank must have:
- A doctorate in International Business and/or Strategy, or a closely related field (such as Business Economics)
- An active research program in international business, including such sub-areas as, for example, international entrepreneurship, family business, and global value chains, with a high potential of future publications in high-impact academic outlets such as AJG4* journals
- A strong record of research in international business, with a portfolio of publications in high-impact refereed journals, including publications in AJG4* journals
- An international recognition as experts in their research fields
- A demonstrated impact in the profession in terms of citations and professional activities (e.g., editorial board membership, leadership in professional organizations, acting as discussants in relevant forums, etc.)
- Corporate strategy scholars with multiple articles in top-quality outlets (such as AJG4* journals) will also be considered
- Evidence of ability to secure grants
- A demonstrated capability in graduate- and undergraduate-level teaching, with excellent student evaluations
- A history of successful graduate student supervision (if their previous universities had graduate programs)
- A demonstrated affinity with the practice of international business strategy, as shown by an understanding of practical issues faced by managers and a willingness to conduct managerially relevant research, capacity to contribute to HSB's engagement with the business community, and/or willingness to disseminate research to the general public and the business community
- Evidence of effective service leadership, as demonstrated by a history of engagement in committees, initiatives and administrative duties at a school, University, or international research and/or business community level
- Evidence of successful teamwork and a collegial approach to interacting with colleagues, students, and other stakeholders
