    Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We are delighted to share accomplishments, news, and activities from Global Strategy Journal (GSJ) in this 2023 Year in Review.

In the Journal Citation Report analyses for 2022, GSJ has an impact factor of 7.6 and is a Q1 journal, while the Academic Journal Guide classifies GSJ as a level 4 journal. We thank the authors, reviewers, and associate editors for contributing to such achievements.

Stewart Miller of Durham University (UK) will become the new Co-editor of the journal in 2024. Stewart’s research interests are in the areas of liability of foreignness, CSR, and research methods. He is replacing Alvaro Cuervo-Cazurra of Northeastern University (USA), who is stepping down after seven years as Co-Editor. We welcome Stewart and thank Alvaro for his fantastic service in guiding the journal to new heights.

We welcomed two new Associate Editors: Qian (Cecilia) Gu of Georgia State University (US), who studies how emerging market firms address evolving and potentially competing stakeholder demands and how their strategic choices affect firm performance, and Srividya Jandhyala of ESSEC Business School (Singapore), who analyzes the relationship between firms and governments, with a particular focus on conflicts between the two. The addition of Cecilia and Srividya to GSJ’s AE team expands the diversity of topics and areas the journal covers.

Sergio Lazzarini of Western University (Canada) and Lucia Piscitello of Politecnico di Milano (Italy) stepped down as Associate Editors. We thank them for their superb contributions in managing the review process and helping authors make their papers impactful.

This year’s GSJ Best Paper Prize went to “Bricks and mortar in a borderless world: Globalization, the backlash, and the multinational enterprise” by the late Steve Kobrin (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/gsj.1158). It joins a stream of impactful articles published in GSJ, including prior GSJ Best Paper Prize winners (https://www.strategicmanagement.net/awards/gsj-best-paper) and other highly cited and read articles (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/20425805?tabActivePane=undefined).

We continued our participation at conferences by joining meet-the-editor sessions, organizing paper development workshops (e.g., AIB, SMS), and sponsoring best paper awards (e.g., EIBA). This year, we initiated a Best Reviewer Award to recognize our outstanding reviewers. We also organized an Idea and Paper Development Workshop (IPDW) at Copenhagen Business School to offer an opportunity for prospective authors to discuss and fine tune their work before submission. We plan to continue this initiative with both online and in-person events, starting with an IPDW in Kampala (Uganda) next February.

The four issues (February, May, August, and November) reflect our goals of a focused, high-quality journal shaping research conversations in global strategy. The regular issues are grouped around common themes, with the first one (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/toc/20425805/2023/13/1) containing articles that bring attention to the micro-foundations of global strategy and its connections with global corporate governance, the second one studying a variety of dimensions of the internationalization strategy (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/toc/20425805/2023/13/2), and the fourth one discussing global digital strategy and mergers and acquisitions (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/toc/20425805/2023/13/4).  The third one is a special issue on “Complexity and Multinationals”  (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/toc/20425805/2023/13/3) edited by Gabriel R.G. Benito, Julian Birkinshaw, Marcus M. Larsen, and Yue Maggie Zhou.

Looking ahead, we will publish a special issue on “Ownership and Global Strategy”, edited by Alvaro Cuervo-Cazurra, Anna Grosman, Michael J. Mol, and Geoffrey T. Wood in 2024. You can find some of the articles forthcoming in these and the regular issues in the early view at (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/toc/20425805/0/0).

Thank you for making GSJ the top journal on strategy in context. We look forward to receiving your best work for consideration for publication. The editorial team has a goal of continuous improvement of the journal’s academic relevance and status.  We expect the journal’s coming years will produce even greater achievements.

Best wishes for the Holiday Season and 2024!

Gabriel R.G. Benito, Alvaro Cuervo-Cazurra, Stewart Miller, and Grazia Santangelo
